Propshaft vibration?
Moderator: martauto
Got a horrible vibration coming from the prop i guess everytime i pull away, seems to be getting alot worse pretty quickly! Could this be the centre bearing? Any ideas, anyone fitted one.... Its a 89 325 auto convertible. Thanks.

Interesting. Ive just had the centre bearing replaced and now have a slight vibration. The centre bearing had completely broken up offering little if any support. Is it possible for the prop the be thrown out of balance or does this sound like another worn coupling?
The vibration really is doing my nut in so any help is hugely appreciated!

Prop will only be out of balance if you didn't line the dots up when you split it.
What condition was the rubber donut at the gearbox end in ? If its knackered this will cause vibration.
You also need to pre-load the centre bearing - it doesn't just bolt up - you need to bolt the prop up to the gearbox, bolt the centre bearing up loosely so its all lined up, and then push the centre bearing about 4-5mm towards the front of the car and hold it there whilst you bolt it up.

That's top advice mate, thanks!
I didn't do the job but I'll be getting the coupling replaced mow anyway so I'll make sure the centre bearing is pre-loaded. I didn't know about that.
Dumb question but I'm guessing that all props have alignment dots and that it's standard practice to make sure it's put back as it came off? The outfit that carried out the work is supposed to be a reusable place.

The coupling is about £65 from the dealer but you can get them for about half that from GSF - just make sure its Lemforder or equivalent and not some cheapo crap or you'll be changing it again not long after.
I didn't know about pre-loading the centre bearing until I picked it up on here by accident
All the props have alignment dots - anyone who knows what they're doing should have picked this up.
