My '88 318i often idles fast. 1200, 1500 or sometimes even the 800 I've set it to. It never wanders, it's always rock steady, just usually at the wrong speed.
I've checked the throttle cable and its adjuster, all the vacuum pipes seem good. Does anyone have any ideas?

Intrigued by "even the 800 I've set it to", since the idle speed isn't adjustable.
Can you explain what you mean please, and also confirm whether you have the earlier M10 engine or the later M40.

It's an m40. I set the idle with the plastic throttle cable adjuster at the throttle body end.
I suppose saying that I'd adjusted the idle was a little misleading.
I've turned it down a bit today and I'll see how it goes.
