Hi guys
ive seen alot of talk about using E36 M3 parts on e30s to improve turning circles etc
Im going to be buying a e30 very soon and i want to swap the older dated parts as soon as possible as ill be buying HSD coilovers for it
What e36 bits can i use? Power steering rack, hubs, coilovers, wishbones?
i also belive you need to use a few z3 parts also?
the main things i want to have on my e30 are e36 hubs so i have a wider wheel choice, steering rack for better turning and bigger brakes for stopping
is there any guide floating about that i can read?
cheers matty
What E36 M3 parts can be used on a E30? what do i need?

The steering rack from E36s can be used but needs modded pipes to fit. The engines from E36s can be made to fit - the M52 is the most popular. The E36 is a 5 stud set up so discs, etc are no use unless you are changing the whole setup and I'm not how easy/hard that is.
You can also use the Z3 steering rack but the one you want is from the Z3 M. The Z3 short shifter is a popular E30 mod.
Have a search on the section for engine mods etc and you'll find lots of stuff.

E36 M3 rack gives a smaller turning circle due to lock stops on an otherwise standard E36 rack.
The general E36 racks have more lock (same as E30) but 3.4 turns lock to lock rather than the E30 4.1 or whatever it is

I've been researching this swap myself for some time and have begun ordering parts.
For the front you will need E36 M3 Evo wishbones and E30 M3 eccentric wishbone bushes to get the geometry right. There seems to be some ambiguity as to whether you need E36 M3 evo struts or if any E36 strut will do, something to do with spring/spring platform diameter. E36 front coilovers can also do the job - if you get E36 Compact coilovers, that'll sort the front and rear springs/shocks out in one fell swoop but you may need to change the spring rate on the front. Either E36 (non-M3 - M3's were fitted with weird variable rate steering racks), Z3 or E46 steering racks can be made to fit. I'm probably going to go E46.
Of course having E36 struts up front means you should be able to fit any E36 brakes that take your fancy.
For the rear, you need the trailing arms off either a Z3 or an E36 compact. They are a direct swap for the E30 items. I have 318ti rear arms.

cheers motorhole,
my plan is to do all the e36 mods the same time i get my coilovers, im going to go for hsd coilovers as pound for pound there the best, will i still use the hsd camber plates or will i have to use the standerd e30 ones?
ive also been told that the rear turrets might need strengthaning if using coilovers as e30s are abit weak, is this true?

As for the front top mounts (I assume this is what you mean by camber plates?), I'm not sure as I havn't got that far yet! I believe the E36 struts should fit the E30 top mounts though, I'm sure someone else can confirm.
As for the rear - general recommendation is yes, reinforced rear turrets are the way forward. I think stitch welding and an extra plate where the top mount goes is sufficient. RPM motorsport also sell offset rose-jointed rear top mounts, these will stop the spring rubbing on the suspension turret and should be up to the extra load.

For the front you need
e36 m3 evo hubs/calipers/disks and wish bone
e30 m3/e36 3.0m3 eccentric rear lolly pop mounts
If your using coilovers you want e30 adjustable top mounts
at the the rear e36 compact or z3 4cly rear arms or use 6 cly z3 rear hubs and brakes/disks in the e30 rear trailign arms.
the steering rack you want a z3 4cly or e46 clubsport rack, the racks do nothing to improve the turning circle just the speed of the stering ie quicker
No Idea why you would want HSD, when for the same money gaz can provide you with a specific set for your car and provide the spring rates for what ever your use is, also they do the required top mounts.
Your ABS will require modification to work and you need some e36 spec alloys as well and a full geomerty setup on the front.
