I've run into a bit of bother with the stripping of the M40 engine head. I bought a valve spring compressor last week from ebay (not knowing much about them) and of course, I bought the wrong one.

Before I buy the right one, does anyone know a way of removing valve springs without the compressor?
Cheers

What you need to do is depress the spring far enough to remove the pair of collets from the stem of the valve.

A valve spring compresser allows you to do this without too much risk to your pinkies....I have heard of people using a shaped wooden block in the head and an open ended spanner to push the spring down, but it's not a risk I would like to take!

Yeah I've seen that too, although I don't think I could take the risk to be honest, I will probably just end up buying a new valve spring compressor

To get it off without a valve spring compressor... Get a socket. Like a 17mm deep. And whack it with a hammer. Make sure there is space between the head face and bench though. It may take a few attempts but it will eventually go..
