No special tools required at all for changing the belt on the M20 ( six cylinder) E30 engine. Even has a built in tensioner.
The M40 (four cylinder engine) requires special tools in theory, but all you need in practice is a 8mm drill bit and a small spring balance.

Paying a qualified Mechanic to do this job is worth every penny, it's quite a simple job but if it doesn't work out right your engine is scrap !
Although you may save a few quid if it hopefully goes ok,
it is a bit of a gamble ?

The m20 is the easiest cambelt I've done - everything is easy to get on/off and there are very good timing marks on the cam and crank. Literally take things off as you get to them and fitting it is the reverse of removal. Personally taking the bonnet off was well worth it too!
Have a look in E30 Wiki (Tab above) to see how others have presented their work. Here is a head gasket job carried out by professionals

Worth doing the water pump at the same time as the belt.
OK more money and time but piece of mind can never be overstated imo.
