Back the shoes of by putting a screwdriver through one of the stud holes ,used a torch and rotate the disc to find a curled nut and wind it with a screwdriver til the disc releases .

Can anyone suggest how to test if the boot lights are staying on with the boot shut?

The shoes are inside the disc for the hand brake so do as sweep says and they will come off and make sure you have the hand brake off

silly little just in case but you've undone the small bolt that is countersunk into the disk and sits flush? i.e. the one which bolts through the disk to the hub. otherwise can you wiggle it or is the rear disk totally solid? could be seized on in which case if you've turned the handbrake lever off, removed the small nut, and removed the rear caliper and can spin the disk but not pull it off the try giving it a tap with a rubber mallet to release it.
hope this helps

i agree with the 2lb hammer notion, just take care if you're planning on reusing the disks! you were changing them and not just the shoes below i take it? i remember taking a set off a suzuki swift once and i had to bash them to hell and back to get them off, they were destroyed by the end!

Are you changing the discs?

If they are well worn chances are a good lip has built up on the inside of the inner drums.

As above, look carefully through a stud hole at around about 12 o'clock and you will see a 'star wheel' that you can push the top or bottom of to spread the tops of the shoes. You want to retract them so the disc can slip over the top.

Have a poke about with a torch, you'll see.

Good luck

There shouldn't be a lip as the hand brake should only be used when the car is stationary

Good point but i have found a small lip on the inside before. Might have just been from the casting but it was just enough to stop the disc slipping off.

A good club hammer did the job though.

Next question will be how do you hold the shoes on as the pin wont stay in the backing plate
