Can anyone help please, I have a 1987 316, with the M10 engine, I cant get the lower timing cover off to cure an oil leak. I can get a screwdriver in at the top and there is movement most of the way down, but the bottom section doesnt want to let go. I dare not lever too much for fear of cracking the cover. Any ideas please?

Are you sure there is not another bolt down there that you have missed? It's easy done when everything is covered in crap.

Edit, if all the bolts are out it might just be on a dowell.

Thanks for the idea, but def sure all the bolts are out, engine quite clean, could be on dowels at the base, but could do with any tips on getting the base out, if you know what I mean.

I don;t have any experience with the M10, but is this diagram any use to you ?

http://bmwfans.info/original/E30/2-T/31 ... l-11_0148/

seems there are a couple of dowels on the bottom of the timing case. . .

item 2 is a dowel.
6, 8, 9 14,15 are hex head bolts.

Try that 8)

Number 2 is the dowell and according to www.realoem.com there's 2 of them.
