Hi All,

I'm new to the forum and would like some advice.

I'm the fool who bought the so called Schnitzer on the bay this week and the engine needs some TLC.

It has a broken follower so i'll change that to get the engine running....hopefully!!!
Now apart from the car using a bit of water, possibly head gasket and or water pump, i thought i may as well take the engine out and give it a once over and possibly even get the crank reground. All of the above are no problem for me but i thought that i should change the oil pump at the same time, so is there a prefered pump, e.g uprated, to use or should i just use a replacement from GSF or even BMW?
Also as the cam belt will be changed is there a prefered brand for that.
I'm not one for driving miss daisy but i do have mechanical respect, so driving hard so long as the engines up to temp with good quality fluids is the way to go for maximum enjoyment.

If there is anypart of the engine i should pay extra attention to that i should know of i would be gratefull of the advice.

all new parts get them from the dealers there are not as expencive as you would think they are gsf stuff aint that good really

new bottom end shells with bolts are about £300 from bmw, oil pump is £100 main dealer only i'd say. You can just buy the 2 main cogs for the pump for arounf £35 instead and give the rest of it a clean.

piston rings and little ends very rarely go wrong, but the crank and shells can wear with big milege

bottom end rebuilds eat the most money tbh. Elring headgasket set and bolts from GSF are fine
