Car runs fine and the temperature gauge sits around the half way mark. When I'm stuck in traffic it goes up to three quarters but soon comes back down when moving. The problem is that when I am stuck in traffic and the gauge goes up,when I try to pull away I get alot of juddering like I'm riding a kangaroo! :(
Is this a common problem or should there be something i need to attend to.
Cheers

Temp sounds about right, as long as it never goes above the 3/4 mark all is probably ok. + Jhonno is probably right on the clutch too, clutch plate a little soft :(

If engine is getting hot in traffic, its probably your Viscous fan (engine driven fan)

Test it by putting a rolled up newspaper in it when the car is warm, it should shred it easily! If it doesn't a new coupling viscous cast around Ԛ£35 from eurocarparts or German and Swedish.

It held on by a backwards thread (think tightening up when undoing it) which you will need a special spanner for, aorund Ԛ£10 from halfords.

A lot of people seam to have hot clutches in traffic, a cooler engine may help otherwise i think BMW do new clutches made from a different material, but that would cost!

Hope its not water entering your engine...

The fan does seem to be running fine and runs all the time.Temp only goes past the half way mark when sat in traffic and soon drops back when moving. Most of the time it sits between quarter and half. I have just bought a new thermostat housing, thermostat, blue and brown senders etc from Euro just neew time to fit them!
I think a new clutch might be in order then :(
Any recommendations? and places who are good at the fitting?

Cheers

The fan may look like it is working, but not be.

The fan spins at a lower RPM than the engine in normal driving conditions, when the engine starts to get hot, ie when the radiator is not getting air passed through it (in traffic..) The Viscous fluid in the coupling hardens up and the fan spins at the same speed as the engine thus cooling the radiator down.

Often the Viscous fluid has got old and does not work so the fan never locks up to full engine speed, thus never cooling the radiator down in trafiic.

THis really is the most common cause for e30s to overheat in traffic.

Try thte newspaper test.
