318is Fuel Pump advice

Hi ,

I've just bought a second hand fuel pump for my 318is, but something doesn't look right.

This pump only has one pipe coming from the top, but the one currently in my tank has two.

The second hand pump appears to have a second pipe. It runs 3 inches below the plate and into the tank and is open at the bottom, but sealed off at the top... (on the picture below, the sealed pipe opening is just above the white plug)




Any ideas?

some of the in tank pumps had a built in return and the other type didnt as the tank had a pipe for the return

I guess I could try and detach the pump bit and attach it to the old unit (assuming they're compatible)?

Def the way forward, I've just did a similar thing.

I removed the black and red wires from the bottom of the main connector to remove the pump from the frame, and re-soldered the 2 wires of the new pump.

My old pump was from a single piped pump, and the newer one was from a twin piped type. IIRC the part numbers matched.

You have a pump from the larger fuel tank, fitted to 325s and tourings.
The pump itself can be swapped over as above.

Well, i've just tried to fit the new pump, and have found that the actual pump part is too wide to fit through the opening in the top of the fuel tank.





So, does anyone here have a fuel pump that a) will fit a 318is, and b) they can sell me?

if you tried to fit it with the sender unit bolted on it wont fit that needs fitting after you get the pump in

I took the pump part off the sender unit assembly to see if it would fit. The actual stand alone pump part, with no wires, no pipes, no anything, is physically too wide to get through the hole.

In that case it's not an E30 pump.
All E30 pumps will physically fit all E30 tanks.

came out of 318i lux brian,i was keeping as a spare i thought i would help this guy out with it,but it aint helped
him i sent him a pic of it first

Apart from looking slightly bent, why won't it go in? As said somewhere above, the level sender has to be taken off first.

i know it was a txxt to ge out si i gave it a bit of force an snapped the wires it came out in 2 bits
i since repaired that and kept it as a spare.i would do as said above swap pump part over onto other body.

Hi,

Yes, I understand what you mean Brian...I removed the pump altogether...unplugged the red & black wires and took the rubber pipe off so that I was just left with the pump cylinder with the little filter on the end.. The cylinder is too wide to fit in the tank by about 3mm.

My original 318is pump cylinder is not as wide, and is connected to the main assembly by some clip together plastic sections. This one is attached with a 2" rubber pipe and some metal ring clips.

Not to worry...I've got another one on it's way that has definately come from a 318is, so I should be back on the road soon....
