Got a 325i that upon starting and driving hard (not thrashing it) there is a clattery sound, sounds like a tensioner on the chain or the chain rattling against something could it be anything else? but when you have driven it a few hundred metres it has gone and you don,t hear it anymore!
As far as I know it doesnt have a chain, it has a cambelt. If it rattles at startup and goes away then it probably needs the valves adjusting. would benfit from a oil change aswell or in extreme cases there is low oil pressure and the oil takes a while to get to the top.probably tappetts though. check the oil level aswel.

2.5 engine uses cam belt, not chain. The only rattles you would hear from cam belt end would be if the tensioner has disintergrated - this would not go away, and would mean you are about to lose the cam belt (uh-oh!)
Has the cam belt been changed? - if you're not sure, my advice is get it changed ASAP, and replace the tensioner at the same time.
