hey peeps

problems with e30 it currently is idling very poor as in sits below 1000 with an iregular idle pattern as it bounces up and down on the counter it also takes a second to catch the revs when applying throttle as if it is misfiring for a second.

just serviced it myself by doing the;

air filter
fuel filter
oil filter and fresh oil
diff oil
gearbox oil

and changed the running gear

checked the spark plugs and they look good but will change if it may be a problem

not sure what this could be any feel it maybe a number of things from airflow too engine timing

for your info its the M42 engine with a timing chain is it possible the chain has gone slack and thrown the timing out if so how can i tighten it and check the timing????

cheers

Hi no its not your timing chain if it had loosened and jumped a tooth you would be looking at bent valves
my 318is M42 ticks over smoothly at about 800
i cant see by the work you have just done that it would of interfered with the smooth running unless you have dislodged or left a pipe loose/off on the intake side it does sound like an airflow problem to me :bmw:

the pipes all over the car are crap most of them dont even have clips on them. also im aware that the timing chain has a tentioner which im not sure is automatic.

the AFM i know you check it with an ohm meter from the glove box but is there a way of cleaning it or checking its not clogged???

Renew any split or damaged breather hoses, they all need to be air tight. Then you can spent time checking other things like
TPS ICV and AFM.

Hoses cost a few quid, a new TPS is about £60 IIRC
