So, with the reincarnation of E30 zone, I thought it'd be good to document the ownership of my touring and moving forwards it's current build...

Back in 2012 I bought a bone stock 318i for £500 (gone are the days), It was a fairly basic spec but had BBS and Alpine white - Ideal!
I drove it as a daily beater for a couple of years, mainly using it to cart bikes and friends on mountain biking trips around the country, the M40 did struggle a bit with 4 big guys and 4 bikes on the roof, so naturally I sold the idea of an M52B28 conversion to myself on the grounds of better fuel consumption. This is when the 30 started to become more than just a car for me!

I started collecting parts and researching in 2015, I was only a bicycle mechanic, and had no car mechanic experience at all so it was daunting to say the least! That said just over 4 weeks later I had an M52B28 swapped touring, with all fresh poly bushes, shocking Jom Coilovers, and still on stock brakes. This was plenty for me considering what it was before!

I continued to daily the car, but also bought a van so that was the end of the hauling bikes around for the old girl...

July 2016 I left my 30 parked at my parents house and took the van down on my yearly trip to the French alps riding DH MTB, sadly I haven't driven the car since, on one of the first days of the trip I misjudged a jump and had a pretty bad crash, breaking my back and paralysing me from the chest down - Bummer. I spent 9 months in hospital adjusting to the new life, I sold all my old bikes as soon as I could and allocated the money to properly building my E30! I've been collecting parts ever since, and have just started the actual build....

Collecting parts;

Full leather interior, needs a little love
Image

LSD!!!
Image

Style 32's... Haters gonna hate!
Image
Trail fit...
Image
Refurbed, with a few runs through a diamond cutting machine, it's squared the fronts of the spokes nicely and looks way more aggressive! AD08r's 225/45 and 245/40, but they look huge (and don't really fit!)
Image
Image

Picked up a 46 330i sport for the M54B30... now at negative cost for the engine!
Image

Now getting on to more exciting parts...

Borg-warner EFR7670...
Image

I had the divided manifold, downpipe, and intercooler parts fabricated in deepest darkest Bulgaria...
Image
Aparently it fits behind everything without cutting, we'll find out i guess! 8O
Image
Tight!
Image

That is fairly up to date on my part store so far, I will update more regularly as stuff rolls in...

The build begins!

Removing the faithful M52...
Image
Front end stripped
Image
Bye ABS!... or is it?!
Image
Rear trailing arms restored, polybushed and 5 stud using ETA adaptors kit (E46 M3 front calipers, 328 rears) - more pictures to come...
Image

That is pretty much the sum total of pictures I have taken for now. I will try and update this as regularly as possible, I'm aiming for completion around late spring, but progress is slow in a wheelchair!

Cheers!

Have you decided if you are going to use an SMG box Jack?

This is awesome! And exactly what I’m planning! I have a 316i touring and going to strip my 330ci for the m54b30 and a full engine rebuild ready for a turbo.

Nice to see someone on the same route so good luck mate.

Looking forward to the updates.

Managed to get a full day in today, with the help of a friend we've made a fair bit of progress!

The dash is out, and interior is now stripped, I've removed the rest of the ABS, and an old aftermarket alarm. Carpets are all out ready for cleaning and dyeing black...
Image
Image

After this we got the car in the air to start stripping the underside for some fresh protection... Sadly the rear nearside inner arch is made of rust and filler, and the offside is only slightly better. A bit gutted because I thought it was solid, but cant't complain too much I guess!
Image

I also got some snaps of 5 stud parts, and BC coilovers

So that's it for today, hopefully more to come tomorrow!

Only managed to spend half a day on the car over the weekend, still in the stripping process...

Image
Diff and tank is now removed (does anyone have a good 63l tank?!)
Image
Rear diff mount removed
Image
E36 backing plate installed, ready for new mounts to welded in next week... hopefully
Image
Image
Also started raking out all the seams to be welded.

That's about all progress for now...

The 5 stud adaptors can be found here... https://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showth ... p?t=400005

Haha, no worries Mart! I've chosen to build it on axle stands instead of our ramp because I can get on a crawler under the car, then effectively I'm no less able than anyone else... Leverage was an issue, so I bought a electric impact gun, and that's solved that one! Only thing I struggle with really is lifting, but luckily I share the unit with 7 others, so there's normally a useful body around....
Basically as with anything, it's amazing how much you can adapt when you need to!

Howdy! I've not had a chance to update in a while.... Since my last post, I've just continued with prep work;

Image
Loaded onto rotisserie.
Image
It's handy having farmer around!
Image
Decided to have the underside and bay sand blasted
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Areas of crust, but in all for it's age I'm pretty happy with the amount of material left!
Image
Image
Image
F+R subframe reinforcements, camber and toe plates, and wishbone bracing (rear shock bracing has been added since this picture)

Now the underside has been stripped the shell has gone to have all it's repairs, and a custom cage at https://hermfab.co.uk/ @hermfab on instagram, He's a top bloke and his work is equally impressive! Will update as we go...

That is all for now, Hopefully it'll get more interesting now the stripping process is over!

Great choice using a beach to do the work! How did they like the sealer? Most blasters around here tell you to remove it before they will go near

Looks like someone has been tig brazing :D
