no the asbestos was left at the place i got the garage from ,i used to strip assy for a living and the old UNCRACKED roof sections were not dangerous although the correct safety gear was worn anyway.

i see my troll is in the jail house so it should be safe to post tonight :D

bit of an update , i've got the spare m52 in the garage and mounted up on the shiny new engine stand ...also managed to get the crank nut undone on the m54b30 block so i can now rob it's internals ..... took the block to a local garage who's big windy gun made light work of the crank nut ..... free of charge :D

Image

list of needed parts are

valve stem oil seals [ got ] elring
both crank seals [ got ] elring
head bolts [ got ] ecp
con rod bolts [ got ] BMW dealer

head gasket [ got ] GSF premium

may not need these parts but i'm going to look at prices anyway just in case...

main bearings
big end bearings
piston rings

the plan is to install the b30 crank/cons/pistons providing the bores don't need a re-hone on the m52 block and check clearances to see if i need to buy the other parts .

if anyone can see owt i've missed or offer some HELPFUL advice feel free to chip in ....

Rich318i need not apply

why do some people use an m54 cam , it's only one of them and i've forgotten which side

You'll need to change fuses 1 and 2 to 15A, and replace the wires from these fuses to the headlamps and the earth wires from the lights to the inner wing with at least 1.5mm2 wire, and preferably 2.5mm2.

Good stuff mick! Hoping to get the m52 out of my touring into my e30 in the new year, heavily considering the 3.0 option. Are you planning to do anything at all with the top half?

had my good man Craig drop round to strip and inspect the spare m52 which we are both now not so sure this was a good running engine going by all the blocked water channels.

i doubt this would of lasted a week in it's current state ...

not the end of the world though it just needs a good clean out , all the head bolts came out ok with no stripped threads so hopefully it'll go back together the same .

i found an engine rebuild place not far from me who will be putting the m54 crank back in the block using Karl Schmidt mains, big ends and rings for £225 inc vat for parts + his labour which won't that much . it looks like the block is getting a re-hone just too keep things sweet .

Craig took the cylinder head home to do the valve stem oil seals and i'll be dropping the block and other parts off on Monday .

the only thing getting in the way is Christmas :D

got the engine block back earlier this month fully built up and re-honed with KolBen schmidt big ends, main bearings , piston rings .
ECP elring and febi crank seals also new BMW con-rod bolts .

freshhh!

Image

Honed in ....

Image

sat looking pretty waiting for the cylinder head to arrive .... howay man Craigeeb pull ya finger out :teehee:

Image

after a strategically placed rocket had been lit ....Craig turned up bearing gifts ...well not really , just my cylinder head with all the valve stem oil seals replaced :D

two hours later and all the worry is over , it's finished as far as i can go until i pull my healthy m52 out and strip it of the other parts i need such as sump, loom manifolds etc , i've stuck an old e36 sump on for now , the cams were drizzled with oil before the engine was turned a couple of full revolutions .

Image

new sump gasket, oil pic up and the coolant stub on back of block gaskets + e36 evo spigot bearing and oil filter waiting for me .

Image

next step is get my engine out of the e30 and have the engine bay painted, i've managed to get some new replacement engine bay stickers from Puka on here for the finishing touches .

Image

never ending story :D

If you can find a used BTB for sale it will blow your mind away. It honestly sounds like standing next to a world war 2 spitfire. Small kids run away crying, old people have involuntary bowel movements and people shelter undertables thinking there is an earth quote. They are absolutely flipping epic.
