I have been toying with the idea of changing my 17" montor for a larger one but have also seen the "duel" screen set up .
Do you need special software to run this set up and how much do you think it may cost ?

17" is tiny these days, you won't regret getting a bigger monitor. :D

For the duel monitor set up we need to know a bit about your PC, but tbh it's only good for gaming, video production or software where you need to work on multiple screens.

What operating system are you using? Do you have a dedicated video card?

Think I will stick with one screen for now.lol. Could I use a normal TV 32" screen as one of the boys may have one ?

You can if your PC video card supports HDMI.

/note you may also get screen lag from the TV depending on it's age.

The resolution on a TV screen won't be that great.

When I was at JP Morgan we set up a couple of 1200 desks with 6 screen setups on the traders floor.
