How long will it last?

Right, having just got inside after rolling around in the dark, mud, rain & wind underneith my Transit fitting a new exhaust section, I felt a poll was required.
I fitted a new section from manifold to centre section, the manifold gasket was just fine to reuse, the centre gasket fell to pieces.
Now, it was 9pm, i've no gasket & no Gun Gum or similar pastes, so, enter the back of the van and got out the silicone sealant gun and after cleaning up the faces of the flanges (

) i siliconed the bastard together and bolted it up.
Question, is how long will it last?

Last option, obviously, especially if you take in some mild off - roading to supply a protective mud case to your handiwork

Get a nice coating of Salisbury Plains finest on there, that's a good idea

It'll add to the rest to hide all the other horrors under there
The turkey will about 5 minutes in my house Rob, i'm guessing you're suggesting it won't last much longer that........ we'll see.......you could be right
Diable.....well...... you know what you can do

Sillicone is holding together 99% of all new builds, your van will be fine.
PS, there was a moosh on the box picking Apples for Cider last night, you and him must have been separated at birth.

You are so right Chris, i re-tiled a bathroom earlier in the year and discovered the bathroom/bedroom wall was no more that 3 layers of plasterboard siliconed together, no studwork, nothing

This Friday.......... no, just kidding, end of October 2014

That's what I've voted for too!
Mind, I do hate silicone, like Fi says, it'll last forever, at least it seems too where i've found people have used it to seal all manners of cracks in walls etc

if it's not too close to the front downpipe the joints will carbon up and form a good seal
am i right in thinking your MK5 has the superb "Banana" 2.5 donk ? if so the 50bhp won't blow silicone out of the joints

Ha Ha... yep, Banana Transit it is, and you could be right, it's not what one would describe as a powerful mill! Reliable, yes, powerful, oh no!

I would get it swapped out asap regardless of if it holds. You take your kids in it don't you? A leaking exhaust under the cab isn't the smartest thing in the world to be exposing them to

It's about $4 a tube from the local plumbers Dan, so not that expensive at all.
All the big DIY stores sell Silicone at more than that.

To right they do, 8 or 9 quid a throw

And for weekend DIY dad, "easy"

to use gunless silicone, which is best part of 12 quid!
