I just heard today that pretty soon cars over 40 years old will not require an MOT !!
Thoughts please.

Indeed, this is true, from May 2018. I have a 1970 Minor Traveller, so I am on the one hand pleased about it, but seeing as the MOT expired at the end of December 2017, I'll need to get an MOT for 5 months.
Last time I took it for its MOT at a branch of Formula One, they just gave it a cursory look over and advised me they'll pass it but it's at my own risk - they clearly weren't geared up to dealing with such old cars and just wanted me out of their door!

The idea was that people who had these cars were total headcase`s and looked after them more than their kid`s.
In my view, we all miss things which other people may see.
I`m a toolmaker and need inspection to qualify my work and it works !!

Only the E46 cab left now.
Just got too old.

This is true. I try to maintain it pretty well (and generally go over it prior to taking it for a test), but have missed certain things that have been picked up in the MOT over the years.
Of course, there's nothing to prevent you from taking a 40+ year old car for a test if you wish, for peace of mind, etc.

Friend of mine did just that, bought a '53 Wolseley 6/80 a week ago and took it for an MOT, simply for piece of mind.

X5 V8 for thrills, CRV for chills, Range Rover P38 V8 for sooooo much aggravation...

Hideous in pictures, more so in real life. Mind, beauty is in the eye of the beholder
I'm trying (unsuccessfully) to convince my wife I must buy an 80's Bentley
