My insurance is messing around. Basically +£500 for anything remotely modern but classic insurance has more than halved. Just so you know +£500 on what I'm already paying is almost a deposit on a house. :(

So it needs to be an old turd.

I'm thinking:

Merc 190 Cosworth
BMW e28 528i

Other suggestions welcome! 8)

P/N before someone comes along and b**ches and moans "do what you want" etc etc. At the moment I'm divided between the two but only so slightly in the favour of the 190.

One of the requirements for a 'classics' insurance policy is that you have regular use of another vehicle.
Another usually is that the 'classic' is not used regularly for commuting to work...

First is easy to overcome, when I was distance lorry-driving the insurer accepted that my private car was used only at weekends and holidays.

Second is rather more difficult! :D

I have both a gloss black moonroof equipped big spec 528i and a 190e 2.6 with factory Cosworth body kit available. Both cars can be supplied MOT'd and fully paedoed subject to budget . Collection from Heathrow, guided tour of the passage and tea and biscuits included :)

Adrian Flux aren't that fussy. I'm under 25, using it as my only car so commuting etc, 20,000 miles a year. £1400! Lowest insurance quote in 6 years!! :)

I think Snakebrain is considering that e28 or Spooks.... with the tiger seal. :)

It would have to be an orginal Cossie :( but the e28 sounds interesting.

How much discount do I get due to my last purchase from Iver!!?

Too modern. Insurance would have a fit, really has to be something that I can get on classic insurance. These are rough quotes I have received

£1.4 eco Astra £2000
Polo 6n2 GTI £3000
Skoda Octavia 1.9tdi £3500

Compared to the £1400 for a Merc cossie or e28 528i.

So old might be more sensible.... might.

My insurance had been reasonable considering my age group.

I was happy paying £1500 on the Astra as that was cheap for me but this hike in insurance has fooked me off and the drop in classic is weird.

Last year Adrian Flux was giving me 'fook off' quotes for old turds!?

I'm looking at leaving the NHS, no luck yet, but it will most likely result in a drop in my wages. (even BMW wouldn't have me :( )

So that and the woman and I saving for our own home means I can't afford to be paying silly insurance until I'm in my 30's.

Plus leaving the Astra behind would be a pleasure, hands down the worst car I've ever driven.

Actually I stand corrected, that was the worst car I had the misfortune of driving!

Mk1 polo saloon, home made coilovers and the M4 motorway (I think it was... the one that goes to Wales)

...one way of playing the game seems to be going for rarer cars... Less cars, less crashes, better stats, lower premiums.. The guy who looks after the aircon at work said his son who is 18, is paying buttons for a Caterham (less than £200 I think).. He was getting huge £1000+ quotes for 1.0 cars too...

How are you paying so much? I'm 22 and my E30 is £700 with all mods declared. I had an Astra a couple of years ago that cost me £300 to insure!

Tough choice of cars though! I like a 190e, but I also like an E28.

I've not noticed that tbh, I got silly insurance quotes for a classic fiat 500.... don't judge me. It's a possibility in the future.

Tried insurance on a Jag 420G for the poops and giggles, again, ridiculous.

Northern Ireland insurance is higher than the mainland (so they tell me)

Postcode is erm, comparable to downtown Baghdad.

A few marks on my license.

My work might effect my insurance.

My first car was a 1.7 Astra G and it was quite expensive to insure but yea struggling with the choice. Really think the Merc Cosworth will sky rocket in value, might be a better car to buy long term but the e28 looks less drug dealer ish! :)

I think most insurance companies are wise to young people buying 'performance classics' I have a funny feeling it just goes on engine size/performance. I don't think previous claims is an issue, seeing as 9 times out of 10 they will write an old turd off in the event of an accident.

You underestimate the sh!tness of a mk6 1.4 eco astra.

It's so under-powered its dangerous! Drinks petrol like its going out of fashion, road noise is worse than my mk4 Astra as is handling and for a car that is just out of warranty, it is awful fond of going back to Vauxhall for repairs.
