I had the rare opportunity to use a pit on Saturday so gave my 318i a full underneth inspection (everything was fine!) but then decided to take the standard back box off while under the car as want to put a Stainless steel box on for looks and to have a bit more pep to the exhaust note!!

Then drove from Cambridge back to Norwich yesterday with back box in boot and a very loud noise from the centre pipe!! (did get a few looks!!)

Can anyone recommend a website for back boxes that will fit ?!?! Althought the current noise is fun its too loud and with less back pressure performance is a little off where it should be!! have about £100 set aside for one!

Not many options for a rear box for an m10 engined car. I think Sebring used to make one, but it would be second hand now.

I think a early single pipe 320i exhaust may also fit.

you took the exhaust off without having yet purchased a new one to replace it before driving home?

wont the police pull you for that? i remember a mate getting pulled few years ago for hi car being to loud and that was down to a performance back box, he had to take it off and then get it inspected by an mot place and then take paperwork to police station and im positive he got a fine to. dont they class it as noise pollution?

Not only that, but your car has to have the exhaust gas's being released out from under the car - the outlet has to be pointing out, whether front, rear or side, but not underneath.

Yeah a tad nuts not running around with a back box but I only do limited milage in her, has taken me 18 months of owning it to put 10k on clock!

But decided with how much trouble it was to take off the box using a pit I didnt want to be using axle stands in a repeat performance at mine so put the zaust in the boot and drove home to loud m10 noises!!!

Am now looking into custom made back boxes which should look good and sound nice as well!!! The M10 it seems is being forgotten about by modifying companies! Which is a shame! is this because they are becoming rare, or the fact that no one is spending money on them now I wonder?!?!

Everybody including tuning companies has forgotten about the M10 , except your neighbours !

And that is a shame as its a proper old skool 4 pot engine!

I got a new replacement back box for my M10 for £20 from a local comapny

not afetrmarket but still better than normal, I replaced mine with the car up on a jack as secondary to an axle stand and it onyl took 5 mins, your best of putting the old one back on until yuo get sorted.

Whats your plans for the M10 any tuning or just leaving it standard?

stag sport do a full stainless steel exhaust for m10 but there site is down at moment

Or do something chavvy and buy a generic backbox and bolt/weld it on ;)

I've got a cherry bomb that I need to fit to mine actually. Should be interesting, hopefully in a good way.

Ive just ordered a custom build S/S back box so hopefully getting that this time next week and will be fitting it next friday

As for my plans for the M10 im toying with the idea of shrick cam, better air flow etc but might leave her well alone as with shrick cam I would be far to tempted to trackday her!!!!!!

Oh and im upgrading front brakes to 325's.............incase I decide to do trackday

I've always thought the M42 engine would be better to turbo wouldn't it? Or is the compression too high to bother?

Compression is a bit too high to push any real pressure into it with stock internals. An effective turbo conversion on an M42 motor would get very pricey very quickly.

Well that answers that question, not going to hijack anymore, as there's already a thread detailing M42 turning.
