You could do it yourself bud, its easy,I just finished my first swap (318i-320i). All you need is an engine crane for a couple of days and a mate or two thats handy with the sapnners :D

You have 51mm struts, rear discs and vented front brakes - so nothing needs to be changed there.

You will need 6 pot springs and a different diff.

If its the cab, the only other thing to change is the front springs and possibly the Anti Roll Bar I think. I have a 325 Cab ARB here if u're interested :D

You'd need 325 radiator, engine, gearbox, propshaft, engine loom, exhaust. Forget what other people talk about anti roll bar and struts and diff etc, you aren't trying to make a 325 replica, just a car with a 2.5 engine right? So the 318 stuff will be fine.

I could do it but I'm too busy with my own car atm I'm afraid :(

Habeeb: Its so easy, just buy a complete 325i engine and box that will comprise: 325i radiator, engine, gearbox, propshaft, engine loom, ECU and exhaust. All you need to do is unplug/umplumb everything under the bonnet, undo engine and gearbox mounts, lift the whole lot out together. Lift new engine and box in place, bolt up the mounts, and plug the new loom in, the ecu is the only thing inside the car, and its the same mountings and only one plug :D as per my previous post, iv just done the same conversion (albeit to a 320i) and had no idea how to do it when i started either. Give it a go! There are lots of people on here to help if you get stuck, but im sure you wont it really is simple to do :D

I went there...was quoted £750 to fit a m40 into it, and about the same to rebuild his current engine....when i asked him about a m20b25 he stated "not work the bother for that car" having never even seen the car.

Doesn't fill you with confidence!

Basically my brother has 2 options.

Option 1:- Get his current engine repaired (head-gasket gone and suspected cracked head) or fit another m40.

Option 2:- Upgrade to either a m20b25 or m50b25/m52b25. This will be alot more work obviously.

I've never even attemped anything on this scale, and if there any zoners local who would do the swap (if we can source all relevent parts needed) then we would prefer this. We don't really have the know-how or anywhere to do such a conversion, hence we would prefer someone who's done it before to do it for us.

Obviously Option 2 is more money, but in the long run would probably be a better option.

Surely all he needs is the relevant m20b25 stuff, engine running gear etc etc.

Max why does he NEED the arbs springs and diff? Im confused

I woulda suggested mjg as he damn sure knows what hes doing but as he's already said hes busy building his own car for this year.

Because the 6 cylinder engine is condirably heavier than the 4 ! And with a 318 diff then 1st gear would be useless ! Dosn't NEED to change them, but would be a much better car if he does :D

keep it as a 318 you have a limited edition car one of only 200 made in neon blue putting in a 325 will affect resale in years to come keep it standard and it will always retain its value and be easy to sell on
