As long as it is booked you're fine because you have to get it to the test centre. You're legally allowed to drive it to and from the test centre without tax or M.O.T afaik.

Was about to say the same.

As long as you're booked in, you're fine.

Anyway, your chances are getting pulled now days are slim.

yes, so far everyones right, you need to have the test booked as they will check this with the station and the car needs to be insured as well. as far as tax goes it is only possibe to tax a car with more than 1 months mot on it so you dont have to worry about that one atm.

Perfectly legal. How else would you be able to get a car with no MOT or tax to the point where you could tax it Alex. Must be a booked MOT though and iirc within a reasonable distance from your home/work wherever.

Some of the cars i had to collect from up north , If they had no mot we would phone and book them in down south , I shit you not 8O
Insurance and trade plates but no mot , Better safe than sorry , Book it and confirm its booked incase you get a tug , If you get stopped and you cant prove its booked in and has no tax they will crush the car nowadays :(

i always thought you could only drive it to the closest mot station without the mot if its pre booked . if it doesnt have tax it shouldnt be on the road at all and had to be trailored to the mot.

Nope you were wrong, if it doesn't have tax it can't be kept on the road, or public property. But can be driven to a pre arranged and booked MOT.

It DOES NOT need to be the closest MOT station either, any copper can confirm this.

Speak with the experts. Unless Cliffy works in traffic, I wouldn't expect him to know the answer. That's not a slight on Cliffy or coppers, but they only are experts on the aspect of the law they have regular contact with.

Hence me suggesting contacting VOSA or DVLA. The two vehicular related authorities.

Well my first car was a car I bought off the road, no tax no mot.. I asked the mot station when I went to book it how I was supposed to get it there and they said aslong as it's booked you can drive it to and from the station?

I don't suppose they would lie? Perhaps I'm wrong though.

This arm chair expert knos the rules because he can use google:

"Driving an untaxed vehicle to an MOT test
You can drive your vehicle to and from a pre-arranged test at an MOT test station provided you have adequate insurance cover in place for the use of that vehicle.

This also applies to vehicles being driven to and from a prearranged test at a Vehicle Inspection Check (VIC) test station, an approved weight testing station and reduced pollution test."

direct.gov.uk The central resource for the private motorist and general public. providing information on driving, buying and owning a car or motorcycle. Holds all the rules you need to know for VOSA and DVLA, and other crap just another excuse for another govenment department, getting tax payer money.

100% correct! You can also drive it home again from a failed MOT or to 'a place of repair', as long as it hasn't been deemed unroadworthy.

I've had to do just this.

My R5 runs out of MOT 8th March, however I wish to re mot my lads R5 instead and knock about in that for a while.
However,if I swap the insurance over to my lads car and it fails the MOT i'm then left with one car with no insurance and the other with no MOT (or tax).
So having phoned my insurance company today I added my lads R5 to my existing policy for one week costing £26,this way my lads car is insured for the MOT runs, and my R5 stays insured too.
It is without doubt correct that all you need to take a car for an MOT is insurance and the MOT MUST be booked in.
