£80 DVLA FINE

Hi,

I received a fine from DVLA for £80. It was for a car I scapped over a year ago. I did notify them by filling in the scrapping part of the log book and sending it to them. They sent me a late licensing penalty letter which I replied to advising that the car was scrapped over a year ago.

However, they're advising me that it's my fault because they did not receive the slip & it's my responsibilty for not checking whether it was updated on their system.

Am I liable for the £80 fine?

Kind regards.

keep writing to them and appeal.. why dont you say, "its ok for the government to lose everyones personal files etc, but when they dont recieve something you posted, its your fault" ????

I get a letter every year saying I owe £80 for a car I scrapped 4 years ago. Scrapped legitimately and sent off all docs.

Every year I send it back with the same explanation and they waive the fine.

every bloody year!

It'll be one of those bloody annoying automatic electronically generated forms, I get the same sort of thing from the mighty tax man for the £100 fine I get every year for not paying taxes on time.

yes, concernnig the tax, I get the same thing from the inland revenue. Ive even been down there to make it clear I dont owe any tax, and Ive been a student for the last 2 years.

They assured me it was all sorted this time, and lo and behold yesterday I recived a letter saying I owe 200 bucks for not filling my form in.

To be honest Im not even going to reply this time, they can stick theyre 200 pound fine notification up their arse.

Sorry for hijack but Im furious!

nothing is ever sorted when they think you owe them cash. many millions of pounds on fancy computer systems and they cant get simple things right and the muppets on the other end of the phone cant comprehend that the computer could be wrong.

So what do I do???

Just tell them I did everything that was required for scrapping the vehicle. And that it's not my fault that they never received it or lost the documentation?

Anything else that I could add to get these scumbags of my case?

Kind regards.

you could lie that you sent it by recorded delivery so you know they definately did receive it but its been so long you dont have the post office receipt to prove it. therefore they have lost it since receiving...tell them you refuse to allow them to shift the blame onto you to cover up for their incompetence

be polite with them for start, it may feel wrong but it will get you dealt with quicker. tell them you have a photocopy of the form you sent off and after seeking legal advice are sure you are not in the wrong.

i keep getting demands for tax returns and i was selfemployed four years ago, i just keep sending off the same letter lol.

Same here. Got an automated form about 2 years ago, about 4 months after the car was scraped, teling me i had to tax the car as it was due for renewal. I rang up, told them the car was scrapped, and they then said ignore the letter and went on to tell me how it was automated etc. So, I ignored it and did as they said. Then 5 months later in january i was fined £40, and if i did not pay it within 2 weeks it went up to £80-. I wrote a letter and they froze it at £40 for a few weeks, then it went back up to £80. I wrote two letters, and had one very very abusive phone call to some sheep shagger in swansea, and i have heard nothing since. They are all talk and no trousers, you've got nothing to worry about.

Just got a letter from DVLA still demanding £80 for a late licensing penalty.

I wrote to them with all the advice from the zone but looks like they're not having none of it.

They're giving me till the 13th or they will be either sending bailiffs or taking me to court lol!

A robust phone call is what eventually sorted mine! Bar stewards still wouldn't admit they were wrong though - final letter was something like 'we will overlook the offence on this occasion'.

Yup, if they don't receive the V5, it's not your fault.

Just keep telling them it was scrapped, and refuse point blank to pay.

I'm in the motor trade, I work as a mechanic with my own place and I scrap a great many cars every year, and also sell on some of the better ones people get rid of that aren't quite ready to get scrapped yet!

It's very important to always send the V5 off, but likewise I've came across them losing it on many occasions. Just stick to your guns.

They sent my mate a letter the same for a car he sold years ago, and the tax ran out a few months ago. They wrote back saying unless he had the letter from them saying he no longer owned the car he'd still have to pay the fine. He sold it before they started sending out letters!

I kept getting one from a car I sold to JonB. But was from the debt collectors, not DVLA. I sent an email back saying it had been sold and they managed to send another one to me, but I've ignored it. JonB has since apparently scrapped the car, but hey, Poo happens!

I always get the feeling that one day they will push someone over the edge and they'll make the journey down there to visit them...US post office style.

Trouble is, you don't know where 'them' are.
I was dealing with an address in Poole, Dorset!

Its Poole...I've had a lengthy discussion with them about about a SORN notice that didn't arrive there. I ended up getting it waived, eventually, with them "letting me off this time", but not without them taking their toll on me.
