335 is mapped, 265bhp

Toby and i had a nice drive over to sunny Norfolk today to get the 335 mapped at Emerald by Dave Walker.
I was going to use all 3 maps for differing fuel types(regular U/L, Super U/L and E85 bioethonol) but the practicalities of having lots of cans of fuel put me off. I ended up driving in with regular U/L in the petrol tank and getting it mapped then draining what was left into some cans and then putting some E85 in the tank.
The E85 is a high octain(105ron?) that in theory allows you to advance the timing more than normal which will give you more power. In PPC Dave Walker mapped his 924 Turbo with it and got about 15 % more power.
Dave knocked a quick basic map up to suit the E85 and went straight on to working on the WOT settings to see if the gains warrented making a full map but my non-turbo engine didn't respond well to it and it didn't allow much more timing to be dialed in. All it gained me was 8lbft in the mid range and 2bhp top end so we decided not to bother with it.
It's probobly the dogs danglies for a turbo engine so it's worth considering using if you get it mapped and reap 15 % gains.
Below shows the results from using regular U/L, there's two lines that closely follow each other, one is the final map and the other is basically the same but with -2 degrees on the igntion.
The power plot lines that are lower are from 2003 when the engine was mapped in my old E34, it's nice to see how my mods since then have helped lift the torque and the power.
If you look at the old torque curve at 2k it was making 180lbft, it's now making apx 30lbft more at the same point. One point of the power plot i'm not too happy about is that peak power drops off to soon in the rev range, if it made it's peak power at around 6-6.2k then i'd may be have another 10bhp. Dave suggested this was down to some sort of bottle neck in flow and to me the most obvious culpret would be the stock exhaust manifold ??

Nice result, Been interesting following this car taking shape and it's really good to see you get a healthy result.

Do you have an M30 fella?
E85 is very populare in Sweden and I have tought about make some changes to the motor so I can runn on the cheap fuel... 265bhp is not bad either and how much milage have your engine done?

cheers Dave
Yeah, it's an M30, i'm not sure of the milage as i bought the Alpina bottom end second hand.
E85 is 3p a litre cheaper the regular U/L over here but it will still work out more expensive to run as you need to use more of it to get the mixture right.

He's in Watton but i only think he maps his own ECU's rather than doing all sort of different work like a normal RR place.
I got the E85 from Dereham Morrisons.

Awesome Andy.
I also plan to put Emerald on mine so Dave can map it, glad you got good results.

whats the ball park figure for ecu, loom and mapping?can you use emerald on turbo'd motors too?

Think the ECU is about £650 plus VAT, then mapping's something like £275+VAT.
Don't know about the loom but it sure can run turbocharged engines
Pretty darned good result there Andy

It sounds like you live in parallel world! Dave Walker is well known from ReykjavÃk to Nicosia and from Lisboa to Vilnius.

Nice figures andy. More than enough to deal with the 2.7 boys...(golf tdi's deal with them also)

Only trouble is i don't think Dave has got the BMW VANOS sussed yet, unless you can lock it ?

You show the final plot with mods plus a tuned plot w/o mods from 2003 so what did the unmapped plot with mods look like, or in other words how much did the retune by itself give?

I spoke to him at last year's Autosport show - he isn't able to control constantly variable Vanos but mine's just an on/off on the inlet cam which he can do apparently.

In 2003 it had the head work and the cam, this time around it has higher C/R, twin TB mod and an x-pipe in the exhaust. It was running well but i wanted a proper map done to suit the mods rather than me messing with the fueling with an WB02 sensor.
This graph is the only one i have.

Ah, thats cool, any more plans for it before hand ? Cams may be ?

pic CD in the post shortly Andy.
i can upload a couple of vids if you'd like?
this car is ace on full throttle, really smooth power delivery and it certainly shifts

I did think of that but I almost think I may as well have fitted an S50 if I head down the high specific output NA route, as cams will lead to throttle bodies etc., then headwork to enlarge ports and so on... so long term I want a supercharger on it. That'll need management and specific cams etc.
Plan is to fit the Emerald for now and get Dave to map it as it should see a benefit even as it is (to compensate for M50 inlet etc). It'll then be ready for the s/c work further down the line.
Bits and pieces at a time basically dude as time and budget allows.

That is great looking,
very nice and stable AFR.
I´ll be it´s a real nice drive.
On the E85, it help with knock so on a turbo car you can raise the boost, that´s where the power came from
more air

.
Running higher compression for more power would require something like E85 and thus worth it.
The power isn´t in the fuel or from more timing as you can´t just keep advancing to make more and more power.
Timing retard is not bad it´s just following the natural curve of the fuel burn time. More air = faster burn = timing must be later = peak cyl pressure happens where it makes the most of it.
It´s only fuel that has extra oxygen in it that can make more power in itself.

Wow, really impressed with that. It's a seriously proper car and a lot of hard work has clearly gone into it, well chuffed for you Andy. Hope to see it on Feb 9th at Bedford, but I really need to get my arse in gear and book it. Would be good to exchange pax laps

a rocky road with many bumps but you hung in and will now reap your rewards.
Kudos indeed( and props to DW of course )

Wooooow, I've just discovered this thread!
Excellent result Andy, good work sir!
That torque curve!!!
I'd love to see a video if you have one, it must have sounded great on the rollers!
I'm well pleased for you, that must surely make a feature in Dave Walker's article in PPC Magazine! ?
I can't wait to see you run it up the strip at Santa Pod!

Yeah, my wallet is a bit light at the mo TBH, i want to do more stuff but.....
A S/C will make that engine very nice, have you thought about which type of S/C to use yet ?
