is it harmful in any way for my car to sit idling for say 30 mins?

reason i ask is my current job involves being out all nite and the car is the only place to get warm etc

just wondering how much fuel it uses and if its hurting the enigine in any way.

cheers :D

ive been told excessive idling causes more damage but that might only be from a cold start.whats your job that requires sitting in your car during the night? a burglar?
what about one of the little electrical heaters you see that plug into the cigarette lighter? or simply a thicker jacket? much cheaper than burning the extra fuel.

am basically guarding a house for 12 hrs :(
as fpr the heater, wont that drain my battery rather quickly :?

other reason i need to start it every now and then (apart from pissing off neighbours  ) is to clear the screen so i can actually see the house im guarding.

cheers for the comments boys, keep em coming :D

guarding a house for 12 hours? and they dont let you in?
for that amount of time id go with the thick padded jacket option and it will also make you look much bigger when confronting undesirables.
or a electric heater with a spare battery in the boot.

Get the top and bottoms. People won't know that your wearing them and even if they do, who cares, your warm.

I have spent many a cold winter E30 meet in a windy McD's car park and toasty warm all night

Won't do any harm whatsoever, unless you have a YB, it might break down :)

Not sure about fuel, put it in your costs and get it back :)

Couldn't you do like Clarkson with the S class merc and stick a wood burning stove in there? Nice and toasty and you can warm some nosh up too! If you are supposed to be covert, the smoke from the chimney might be a give-away though :?

At idle your engine isn't efficient, you're won't necessarily getting a clean burn and possible causing/increasing carbon build up and valve seat burn.

If starting up from cold and leaving idleling, the engine will warm up slowly. Extra fuel on cold start maps can cause bore wash, and of course oil won't be moving round the engine as freely or providing it's best lubricating properties as cold.

Load on various engine components is actual higher at idle than higher RPMs at small throttle openings, this again can contribute to engine wear.

Also oil pressure is lower at idle than higher RPM, this again won't help oil circulation, lubrication and the oil to get to an efficient operating temp.

I never let a cold engine sit at idle to warm up in the UK climate - if perhaps we got down to serious extremes I would at least let the engine get some heat before risking any revs, however we don't.

Gentle driving, holding up to say 2.5k revs on light throttle openings is a far kinder way to drive a cold engine.

you will get carbon buildup but as long as it gets an italian tune up now and again it shouldnt be much of a problem, maybe some slightly thicker oil to improve low speed oil presure?

Well over 270k on mine. And I never get in turn on and drive, I have always let it get to running temp first.
