E30 Zone

after a quick ring around today to try and get a rough quote for my car its seeming impossible. Dad rung Adrian Flux, HIC and another company and they all refused to insure my car with me on it.

The problem i am facing is that i want to put an m50 into the car for next year, the engine swap is going to be easier than getting an insurance quote it seems.

does anybody know of any companys that will even give me a quote? baring in mind im 18, and the silly thing is that i can get insured on a stadard 325 but not my 316 with a 2.5 engine in it.

so anybody got any ideas.

otherwise ill drive around in an e36 for a year the dump the engine and the suspension onto my e30 next year when im 19

Well insure it as a 316 and don't do the swap for a year... Or get your old man to insure on classic with Adrain flux and then anyone can drive it with permission....

I think you are going to have to forget about modified insurance until you are 21, that's my experience anyway. I don't think you will have any luck when you are 19, I may be wrong though?

Adrain flux wont quote you if are trying to get a fronted policy (in your dad's name) and the same is true of HIC.

what is the scroe if i was to insure his fiesta in my name fully comp and him insure my car fully car could i drive it with the engine change 3rd party?

Sadly, insurance companies are wise to that. At your age nearly all the insurers will not offer the luxury of being able to drive someone elses car if you have a f/c plicy, normally you have to be 21. Which leads me back to my first post...

well im gonna ring around a couple more times and if no luck then ill probally take it off the road for a while, do all the engine work etc, and probally drive around in an e36 318is which you can buy cheap with a nice high spec and not particularly high miles.

Try www.peterbestinsurance.co.uk, have your dad as the main driver and you as second.

thats what we have tried with no luck at all,

but we shall try them, but it will be a shame not to be able to drive my e30

Have you tried Elephant? I've got my 316i insured with them, it hasn't got any engine mods though but I have altered other bits They don't actually cover the mods as well though

I've just remembered I was insured with CIS for the first year on my own policy and they covered the mods when I was 20 though for £1200

getting my 316 insured is not a problem, the problem comes when i tell them i want to insure it with the engine change.

Well, you car looks to be modified as it is and as such your insurance is void - so perhaps just keep that ploy going, council style aiiiiii.

no Theo is 100% standard

all factory upgrades, and nothing a little paint is going to do any harm to,

i jsut see the e36 as being an easy way to cruise around in a little luxuary for a year while my car gets the full treatment.

Why not buy a 325i and insure that? It'll be lightyears better than your 316 and keep you happy for a couple years, then you can approach the swap?

He's a got a point. A void policy is a void policy. It's either stock and valid or modified and invalid, there is no "It's slightly modified" middle ground.

Unless your car is completely standard or every mod has been decried, and if so, let me know who you're insured with!

It wasn't a dig at you, more of an observation. (But let's not be silly and say that it's standard though)

I would take what HIC said about insuring you at 19 with a major pinch of salt. When I was fishing for insurance several companies (HIC included) made such claims, and nothing ever came of them. I would be interested to hear what companies, if any, are insuring 19yr olds on modified bm's. Anyone on here?

Did YOUR car leave the factory with those "upgrades"? If not, it's modified.

A 325 engine is a factory upgrade too.

100% agree with you but i dont think im going to find a 325 with as good a shell as what i have got now, and when i say there is no rot in my shell i mean that, that is the reason for the swap, and its only 10months till im 19 so its not like its that long,

im insured with Quinn Direct, for £1200 dads policy, and there is nothing wrong with my car,

I think you will be very lucky to get a decent quote, if any at all on an m50 at 19 years of age. Hell i only just got insured on my 318is when i was 19 without mods declared. Im not 20, back under my dads name (owning my own NCB) and am still paying 700 wihout mods declared, with three years of drivign & a clean license under my belt. The majority ruin if for the minority im afriad mate. Offroad seems like the likeliest option im afriad!

Joshy: when i say factory option i mean, you could tick them from the start for my car i.e, disks all round, 15"bbs wheels. and the car is a 316 not a 325 so the 2.5litre engine wasnt a factory upgrade to the 316.

Dan: Unfortunatly its looks more and more like its going to be going off the road to be honest after crimbo, and im i realise what ever i insure is going to be expensive hopefully no more than this year.

ian, there is a classic car insurer in brentwood that deals with mods aswell the only thing is i can't remember the name all i can remember is its on the high street give it a search and you might find it with any luck and i know for sure they deal with young drivers.

chris, all the people we tried dealt with modified cars but an engine swap is a no go at my age, but ill try find out who they are, trust me the 2.5 will happen when im 19,

but if i get an e36 318is ill probally end up tunning that anyway, oh dear

insuring a 325 at 19 no problem i did was only hundred quid more than my old sierra thats with tescos. i have previously run a car that was 1litre on the log book but had a 1500 in it !!!

im insured with kwik-fit, my car has been lowered, engine swap (registered with dvla) got insured same day i passed which was 3 weeks ago, im 20.. and its costing about 2k a year

my first car was insured with kwik fit. Second year it jumped up loads!

decided that im going to get myself an e36 318is and insure that while i do all the work to my car then try and get my e30 insured once im 19

e30's are notourisly hard to insure in the first place. 18 + e30 + mods is a no goer!

Now that insurance companies are wise to the "driving other cars thing" e30's make little financial sense to anyone below 21

If its fast you want to go, there are lots of choices out there that are cheap to insure for bazar reasons. If its a fast e30 you want, tough luck pal unfortunatly.

John ive sorted what im doing now anyhow, but tell me about it, its silly on what else you can get insured on at a young age.

I'd forget the e36 and go for a 325i e30. Over the year either improve it aimed at a saleable market or frag the b4stard to help fund the M50 conversion.

im thinking with a financial head on here, if i go for the e36 its going to be a hell of alot less to insure for the year, will use no less petrol i wouldnt of thought, hopefully will hold its value and the ones i have looked at so far all have a nice spec, half leather, mtech kit etc, just want something abit different so that i still appreciate my e30 and the amount of money is going to cost me,

ive just found out you can only insure one car with only one ncb, i have over 9 yrs ncb, my tourings insured with quoteline and im trying to insure my 325 with flux and they want another 200 quid because they say i cant use the ncb because its on the touring, i thought the ncb applied to the person not the bloody car

you can only use NCB once, if you start another policy for another vehicle whilst still insuring the original then it is ultimately at the discretion of the insurer as to how much of an introductory NCB they want to give you/ how much they want your business.
