I usualy have a 25ltr drum of engine oil on the shelf, gear oil,ATF and antifreeze in 5 ltr size.Small bottle of brake fluid.Filters for all cars.I have a shelf for Daimler oddments and several shelves of E30 bits and bob's.I throw very little away, only parts that are worn out or rusted out. When I swapped doors recently the only part that was taken to the tip was the rusty shells, every other part was removed and stored'just in case'....the garage is refered to in the family as Dad's playroom...until they want something making...

To weigh the back end down when it snows right?
I like to keep a few spares, couple of M50 heads, at least one iron block, M52 cranks, piston and rod sets, M50 manifolds, 328i gearbox and a couple of diffs amongst other bits and bobs.
You never know when you may need it, and I dont like to be caught short

Three spares cars, oil, antifreeze, car paint equipment and all the crap that goes with it, carbs, injection manifolds, old window mechs off of various cars, alternators, starters, loads of cleaning stuff, metal detector (for when I lose my rag and throw parts into the wheat field), seats, half of Matalans tee-shirt stock for last year (dont tell my wife!) Vodka and money I make from servicing cars at home (again, don't tell the wife).

99% of what has been listed so far is simply replacement parts.
I read the question as "Essential" spare parts.

Oh! ESSENTIAL spares........ A modified three pin wall plug (where you would thread the earth or negative wire into) cut to about 4mm by 4mm to repair my throttle cable on the bike carbs as it snaps every two or three months, usually in the worst possible place and time.

In car :toolbox, fuses, spare lamp bulbs, a sleeping bag (miles and miles of uninhabited countryside round here!), small bottle of oil and a bottle of water. I want to begin collecting some bigger parts though, stuff like starting motors, alternators, rear light lenses and so on.

The boot was empty except for two pairs of cowboy boots, and a license plate "CNH 320", issued in Hazzard county. Wasn't your old E30 was it Rosco?
