Hiya,

I got a quote of Ԛ£32per month on a 318i Lux for me and B/f fully comp. Would a classic policy be cheaper than this or should i be grateful forsuch a kind offer?

Also where are good places to go for classic policies? my "little" brother will be 20 this month and wants a 318i but is thinking of just de-badging a 316 to save on insurance... but it will be no fun to drive will it?

316i's may not be sportscar fast, but I've always found mine fun to drive and usually fast enough. :)

as long as its an e30 it doesnt matter on the engine,

i would think that the insurance on a 316 for a 20 year old would be reasonable. i found elephant cheapest by miles and miles. :)

Classic insurance is cheaper but you must have a second car to drive as your daily motor as clasic insurance limits the amount of miles you can do in a year. Its also only available to people who are over 25. Well thats the way it is in northern ireland as thats the way I run my 325i.

That's not a bad price. Try getting a classic car quote to see if it's cheaper.

You can't just debadge a car and tell the insurance company it's something different....

The logbook will still be the same, and if you were involved in an accident (touchwood you won't be!) and the insurance company had a proper look round your insurance could be invalid.

The 1.8 would be good fun enough anyway! :D

No no!!

I'm warning against doing it!!

Up there someone said....."Thinking of debadging a 318 and insuring it as a 316"

I was saying it's pointless cos they can find out and you could get in sheet.

:D

I'm a classic cars guy and I bought my first E30 back in March. Just thought my experience of getting insurance may be of help.

As a rule of thumb, for the right car and driver , a classic car policy should be cheaper than a standard policy but there are (many) limitations.

I've had classic cars policies with Footman James for many years but, in the end, I bought a standard TPFF policy for my 1986 320i. It costs Ԛ£140 - now that can't be bad  . I was quoted fully comp for Ԛ£50 more but I'm a cheap skate (and the car isn't worth much anyway).

Classic cars policies are cheaper for a reason. You get best value only if you fit into the limitations. The limitations are:
1. Lots of insurers don't do classic car policy for BMWs under 20 years old (the car, that is), because of their tendency to wrap round trees. I know some do but premium rate reflects added risks.
2. Most insurers require you to have use of an additional "daily" car - i.e. one insured under standard policy.
3. You don't normally get NCB for classic cars insurance. So it doesn't help if you want to build up NCB for the M3.
4. You get best value in classic cars policy if you restrict your mileage to no more than 4.500-6,000 miles per year. You could up the limit no problemo but premium will also shoot up alarmingly.
5. You'll need to be member of a car club - at least that's no hardship!!

In my scenario, standard policy actually works out cheaper ('cos the car is just under 20 years old) and there's no mileage restriction. Just as well since I've done nearly 2,000 miles since March! They even gave me the equivalence of 6 years NCB, which is reflected in the premium. Very, very nice people.

In your case, Ԛ£32/month fully comp for a 318i at your tender age sounds like a pretty good deal to me! :D

Think she was suggesting taking the badge off a 316 so his mates don't know what it is, rather than the more serious crime of insurance fraud :)

When I was 19, I had a 3000miles per year only car classic policy on my GT6 (which is a 2litre inline 6) and cost less than Ԛ£200 a year :)

you were right, i meant taking a badge off a 316 so people dont know what it is! my bro doesnt go to shows or anything, he enjoys restoring cars cosmetically and doing bodykits etc, but he just poses round town :-) He just wants a nice looking car!

Yep you are limited to what you can do with a clssic policy. I have to do less than 3k miles a year for a start, have a 2nd car as mentioned, plu a whole heap of other stuff and i still pay Ԛ£1,200 a year. That's with 8 years no claims and i'm 33, so you youngsters have it easy compared to me

Just renewed the motorsport for Ԛ£199 with Carole Nash.
Absolute bargain. Limited mileage but you can pay a little extra if you plan on doing more miles.

Gets better, Adrian Flux agreed to beat it to keep my business at Ԛ£192, through Equity Red Star.
Think i'll take this one....!
