E30 Zone

A mate of mine is selling a 316 on an E plate...

When he bought it, it had been stood for the best part of two years, as it had failed it's last MOT and the previous owner couldn't afford to do the work on it.

My mate hasn't done a thing to the car, except to drive it the five or so miles back to his house, and give it a wash.

I'm not sure what the car failed on, but I think the PO said something about brake lines (amongst other things).

Now, my little brother has his heart set on an e30 (wants to be like his big bro lol), and my mate has offered him this one, for £250...

Are these cars worth saving? Is it worth £250?

All I know about the car is it's pretty tatty inside, almost every panel has a slight ding in it, and obviously it's gonna need a ticket.

I have some pictures of it at home, which I'll post up later...

What are your thoughts?

It's not worth anything as it is IMO, £250 will get you something much more usable if you spend wisely. Not everyone sees the e30 as being valuable so there are bargains to be had.

If it needs a ticket the most you should pay is 150/200, yes its an e30 but for the perspective of buying and selling cars its an old dented 1600cc WITHOUT an mot, i sold my orion for 250 thats with tax/mot and pretty damn tidy. Its simply not worth whats he is asking but thats only my own two pence...

The trouble is, my bro is only 21, and a couple of years ago was banned for drink driving, so he's really only looking for a 316...

I just thought that as this car has the hallowed M10, with a little tinkering it could go quite well...

Not worth it really, i bought an M40 318i for that price with T&T which also had sport seats. A car thats been stood for a long period and hasn't got an MOT is near enough worthloess in my opinion unless its something special.

Small dents are not what you should be using to evaluate the car, you need to look for rust, pulling all of the boot lining out is the first step, check the scuttle, sills, floorpan, pull the interior carpet up in the footwells, check the sunroof etc.......

If it passes the above inspections its a good base to work on.

The M10 is a much better engine than the M40, if your brother is limited to 4 cylinders then the M10 is the best choice IMO

To be honest, I think so long as it's solid, it might be worth it... I would just be happier if it came with a years ticket on it

Maybe I should just bung my mate £150 and see what he says...

I think as long as its solid its absolubtly worth saving, without a doubt. I used to have a E plate, Cirrus blue 316 and i loved it to bits! If you put a proper carb on it instead of that Pierburg nonsense its a proper laugh!

I got my 316 m10 for 165.00, that was with a couple of months tax and test and 47 on it from new solid car but had some faded paint so looked a lot worse than it is

To be honest, I haven't seen it since we went to pick it up (looking as it did in the top pic), so have no idea what the condition of the bodywork is really like...

As has already been said, I think only the engine is worth anything, and since we don't have a car to put it in, it ain't much use!!

i bought a clean 316i auto that only needed a cylinder head for £100.

i wouldnt bother with it, like jb says we stripped and cut up a better one today get a good base to start from , everything else is fixable

i would keep my eyes on ebay and pistonheads theres plenty of bargains come up its jut getting them close to you and having the cash at the right time.

Sad wrong scrap ! Note the wrong headlights (smileys from an '89 on car) , the metal bumper and early front valance off a chrome scrapper. Definately some front end wrongness. The only consolation ,being a 316 it wouldn't have being going fast enough to do any serious damage !

PS contrary to what others here might tell you, the engine is worthless ,as in sweet FA . Frag the turd, £60 down the iron yard !

well spotted pete never noticed that till now its got front chrome bumper with early valance yet its got facelift rear lights and plastic rear bumper makes you wonder

my local scrappy gives you around a £100 for cars

The front wings and bonnet look wonky too

3 years ago my mate was given an E plate 316 for nothing. It was in better nick than the car in those pictures. About a year ago, he couldn't give it away to anyone else so it ended up being scrapped. It was still in better condition than the one in the pics.

So it's probably worth as much as the 1990 318i my mate is trying to sell. According to here....nothing....and not worth fixing either by the sounds of it.

Although, your car is the 2 door. So maybe the shell is worth something to someone as long as it's solid underneath...which it probably isn't.

Pacer - Only reason I was keen to get this car with this engine is because of the M10's tunability - I thought it could be fun to see what power we could get from it, but on reflection I think it'd probably be wiser to do what I did - buy a £500 316i, drive it about for a year or two and then stick an M20b25 in there...

Next time I see my mate, I'll refer him to this thread, and then wave a tenner under his nose!!!




Seriously though, I think you're right - it's not worth anywhere near £250, so we definitely wont be having a deal...

Funny thing is, I know how much my mate paid for it, and £250 isn't a lot more than that so I guess he's gonna be stuck with it for a while!!

The M10 IS tuneable to 200bhp+

However, you will be wanting a 2 litre block/crank and a 121 head for starters!! The 1800 doesn't have those bits...

So the engine is scrap...
I'll warrant it has a 4 speed box or an overdrive 5 speed...

For decent performance from an M10, you want the 5 speed sports box (dog leg first) from a 2002 Tii
You will also need either some sidedraft carbs, such as Weber DCOE, or the Kuglefisher setup from a Tii again...
Or if you have plenty of money and want the last ounce of power, then a slide throttle and mechanical pump from an old Alpina race car (good luck!)

The rest of the car looks poor...
and the pictures aren't all that...

I'd save your cash...

Buy a decent shell and then find a decent engine, M10 if you choose, to go in it...

I can't take credit for the pictures I'm afraid - I've not seen the car since we pulled it out the hedge!!!:D

As I said, I've knocked this idea on the head now, but I still like the idea of a 200bhp four-pot racer!

I used to run a 2002Ti replica with a 2litre M10 on 50DCO carbs....That made a solid 195bhp at 7200rpm and weighed 750Kg...Utterly reliable (so long as you didn't buzz the motor!)

That's £50 worth tops. Sorry but you can buy a really tidy 316 for £500 and it would cost more than £500 to bring that shitter up to standard.

If you want to modify an E30 with an M10 look for an M10 engined 318i, then to modify it use a snail
