Owned for 6 weeks - Could be written off...

I hope someone can shed some 'own experience' positive light on this thread...
Basically had someone in a new style 5 Series reverse into the front of my E30 Touring. He wanted me to opt for visiting his "mates" garage for repairs... Cutting it short I opted for insurance and he may/may not accept liability!

I'm confident either way as I had a friend in the passenger seat as a witness.
The problem comes into play when the body shop value the damage done which isn't that much tbh (front bumper needs painting, new grill, indicator fluxed on one side) but if they price the work over the book price of the car then the obvious will occur...
So my question - has anyone had this happen before and bought the car back from the insurance comp when they wrote it off? If so, is it a simple process?

Doesnt sound like a write off really. Get an assesor over and speak to him and let him know that you dont want it written off and ask for a payment in lewes.
This is what happened to me and the damage to my car was far more costly to repair than yours sounds.
If it is written off you should be able to buy it back yes. and it is usually a simple process

Sorry to say that most of the time if not all the time the other insurance company will not accept your mate as he is not an independant witness in their eyes as he knows you thus making him not independant but associated.

That's right down on the South coast though. What if it's not local to him?

Not an e30, but i had a mk2 golf written off. Got market value payout for it which was £1000, bought it back of the insurance company for £30 and had it fixed up again for a couple of hundred quid. Can work in your favour really!!
Dont worry!!

Interesting responses
Had the car into the body shop on Friday so shall wait and see what quote they give in the coming days. Not all that bothered about the mate as a witness thing now as it's been filmed on CCTV... Happy days!!!
To be continued...
