E30 Zone

There great cars to hang it out i know, but what i wanted to know is whats the best way to set up a 3door e30 for some sideways fun? And where is the best place to go in the sussex area obviously legal!! I have a 316i automatic i bought as a runaround and after hitting some roundabouts in the wet i remmebered how much fun they are so i just picked up a 325i manual MOT failure on rot and am getting it through MOT next month and wondered what i need to do to the car to make it as well set up as poss budget is £500 it has 15" bbs and is stripped bare i sold leather interior and it has a single subaru bucket seat, thats it. weld it but if it is a daily runner get a LSD as a welded diff will be a pian to drive with, get it slammed on the BBS, if you havent got enough for a LSD then get a high ratio diff from a 320/318/316

welded diff's are fine in daily drivers, bit of scrubbing in tight turns and you cant drive like a cockpiece when its wet.

High ratio diff wont do anything except make it accelerate faster, in no way whatsoever will it help with drifting.

Low profile tyres will make it break out suddenly, high profile ones will hinder it. 16's with 45 profile and about 40 psi will do the job.

But tbh, tyre size doesnt make much difference at a drift day because you'll be using any old steels and part worns you can find.

Best advice if you want to learn to drift is to go to practice days. With enough abuse, anything will drift.

so giving the rear wheels more torque won't affect how easy it is to break traction.

no, because you dont initiate a drift with torque/power alone, weight shift, clutch kick, etc etc.

If all you want is wheelspin, get an lsd and do donuts.

drop it and keep the metal down, it will drift trust me.

You don't need to have the diff welded to make it go sideways. An LSD will do just fine.

Maybe the drift guys do but then it will be awful on the road. With skill and control of the right pedal it could go sideways well.

Maybe just stiffen the suspension up. If you have trouble getting the rear end out through slight understeer, just dip the clutch and apply a little power and release the clutch(a quick dip of the clutch) and this will snap the back end out.

Be aware that to much power and it will snap the rear end round.

I can 100% guarantee that if you take a non LSD fitted E30 to a piece of dry tarmac and give it full beans sideways it will spin up the inside wheel in an unsatisfactory manner and not produce the controlled Tiff type antics you are anticipating...

yeah you cant drift with an open diff... not at all. Completely pointless even trying. The fact you couldnt do it has nothing to do with skill or anything like that, its all because you had an open diff.

yeap - an open diff can drift fine. It's harder, I think you have to have good speed in the first place, then once drifting keep the power in a bit more cos once one wheel finds grip it's bye bye drift.

Yup, you have to be a bit of a mentalist to do it, but if you want to learn to drift, and can do it with an open diff, when you move to a mig spec or lsd you will be much better prepared for it.

As the old chinese proverb goes...

'man who drifts in shitter with gay open diff drifts gooood in jdm sh*te with torsen diff (when he can afford it and has stopped breaking things by being shit)'

Yeah it's true. Same as learning to drive... you don't go out and by a TVR as your first car!

But, that's no reason to discourage the man from getting an LSD. Makes the car a whole lot more fun in general.

But e30 lsd's are shit. afaik they dont offer 100% lock... something along the lines of 25%

so... money would be better spent elsewhere, and on a welder.

The standard 25% lock makes the car a lot more tractable (I don't really know what that means but it feels like the right word so I'll run with it for now). when I switched to an LSD I really enjoyed being able to get the power down quicker, traction out of tight corners. It's just much better overall. This is BMW after all

In my best brianmooore impression - the e30 lsd is good at what it's designed for.

It's certainly gonna drift better than an open diff too.

The guy isn't a competition drifter, if he wants to hold a powerslide in a more controlled manner then please tell me how my advice is so laughable.....

And yes, if you boot an open diffed E30 on dry tarmac it will spin the F*** out of the inside wheel and actually be quite hard to control.

I never claimed to be a drift superstar, I just took my car to a piece of tarmac, booted it and that's what it did. Never tried since.

but i tend to just get a nice power slide or hero slide in mine rather than full on drifting. i think the word 'drift' is over used. power slide could be more accurate?


for the best set up i would lower the car and stiffen it.
go withe a -60 drop at the front and a -40 at the back to point the car down and give it more turn in!

then strut brace front and back, dont piss about with cheap aluminium stuff off ebay as it will flex.

practice with your open dif and if your serious about drifting compertitions get 2 difs?
one for road use and one welded dif for drift action - thats if you can be arsed to change them all the time?

I'm quite lucky in that department though. There's a gravel carpark 2min from my house. Was there with a friend once, he'd had a bit too much to drink and my dounts made him wanna puke - lol. Worst bit was that as he got back in the car from the bushes the cops came around the corner and started the old good cop, bad cop routine - they thought he'd stashed a load of drugs in the bushes when we saw them coming and that we were both high. One of them was screaming til he was blue in the face that I had a criminal record and demanded I stop lying. lol.
