E30 Zone

Hi

What sort of mpg are you 335i guys getting, both cruising and giving it some.
Im interested in the conversion but unsure if fuel costs will be astronomical.

i will tell you how many mpg i get on the motor way to manchester not this weekend but the weekend after if all goes to plan.........

Think I got about 25mpg on motorway cruising. MUCH less when having a bit of fun, and absolutely crippling when on track LOL.

Depends on diff. I had a 3.73 in it and managed a round trip on the motorway of 300mile to 50quid. (cant work it out, but not bad considering.
Around town, was roughly 180-200 to 50quid.

Now I have a 3.15 diff, but the speedo doesnt work, but it's got less grunt, but more economical.. I have a 5th gear now instead of needing 6th!

This is the first week mines been running and so far it's doing around 100 miles to £20 and that's with a little playing

I have a 3.79 diff in mine (i think, standard sport diff?) and the most i can get is 20mpg
Roughly about 180-190 miles per tank. Which i think is crap but my girlfriend took it to her
work the other day (60 mile round trip) and she didnt even use quarter of a tank.
I think it might be me.
I do wish it was better though because its £20 a day to take it to work. I dont though, i get a lift!

cost is dependant on what you buy, but lookin at about 200 for engine, 150 for mounts, 200 for box, 50-90 for a rad, 100 for exhaust, 100+ for a prop, mastercard for the smiles it wil give you! Factor in other things like a cooling fan- can be elec, can be viscous. depends on what p[osition the engine is in. More if you want to bufty the engine ie: paint it etc for gaskets.

I think most 335s are barely any worse on fuel than a 325i ?

I was expecting worse, I can get 20mpg with every day driving, giving it some now and then and I've had 27mpg on a 300 mile trip.

well as long as you use a sensible diff it can't be worse than an e34 535i can it

e30 is more aerodynamic (smaller frontal area at any rate) and much lighter than the 5-series. that's all the justification you need!

mine does god-awful mpg, but it's not standard

So they cost well over 1000 then not including labour, Blimey im only 17 when they see some one like wanting to put an engine like that it god knows what price they'l want.

Assuming you are in the UK, I pretty sure you wont have a chance of getting insurance i'm afraid

Need to wait 'til you're 21 I'm afraid.

depends. You could buy a scrapper 535/735 for about 300 and sell the rest. That's pretty much all the stuff there. There are ways to save cash, you just have to think of the overall picture.

I had an e34 535i sport it could do 32mpg @ 70mph according to the obc,but not often

If you're worried about fuel consumption, don't do it captain!

Toby, what did you get with your 535?

I average around 25mpg in my E34 535i, though I've had 30mpg quite regularly by taking it easy. Not much worse than my E30 320i & 325i were. Putting foot down rapidly brings it down to low 20s (or less) though.

I aint botherd about the insurance there are ways around that whose gunna catch you in one of those its just the labour costs of putting one of these engines in

my e28 did 19mpg around town and never more than 28ish on a cruise

it wasn't great really

True but how do you think i drive my 325i's its got to be done.

Meanwhile, back to the real world. In terms of mpg, an auto 635 does 18-20mpg around town & 23-27mpg touring/motorway. That's brim-to-brim not obc.

The E30 is lighter &, depending on choice of diff, you can expect better but talk of over 30mpg for an E34 535 is frankly optimistic unless you're pussy-footing around at Driving-Miss-Daisy speeds.

My E34 530 used to do 28mpg at the very best and that was on the motorway doing 60 - 70mph trying to keep the econometer on 30mpg or higher.

I recon there would be very little difference on fuel economy from a 2.5 to a 3.5, roughly 18mpg round town and about 25-28mpg on the motorway.

I'm hoping Miller might have one of their half-price Xmas offers on an M30 MAF; fitting one to my 325i dramatically raised the average mpg figures (presumably as a result of removing the restrictive AFM).

The original AFM was never considered restrictive. Alpina didn't think it was worth it.

When you consider that the throttle body is 60-odd mm diameter and upstream the AFM has a 50mm square hole i'd say it's pretty restrictive.

Makes me wonder how a BBTB can possibly give any gains with the AFM in place.
