The saloon mirror fixes into the roof above the screen. The convert mirror has a twist fixxing to the glass via a triangular spring clip.
However, it lists the convert mirror as also fitting the e39 and 46............which means an auto dipper from a 39 would fit

mine's just got the circle where it must have stuck on. I need to get this off first (white spirit?) then stick a whole assembly back on. BTW how do auto dipping mirrors work?

i have heard about the e39 auto dipping mirror and people who have been ripped of on ebay over them as the mirror has a seperate control unit and it will not work without it im not 100% but i dont think the control box can be removed as its part of the dash electrics. ....when removed from a e39 they are useless but in ebay tradition they forget to tell you this
if you fit it to a convertible it will need to be wired so you will need to run wires up your screen where they can be seen
the e30 sport mirror can be made to fit a cab see the following link

by the way chrisbarns is that circle in metal on your windscreen if it is, thats all you need to fit the mirror if its a glue mark then the metal disc is still available from the dealer part number 51 31 8 145 530 costs about £4

car isn't with me at the moment - will check when i get it back tommorow. From memory I had thought its a rubbery glue circle but I didn't investigate it closely.

if its just glue it will clean off but you will need the metal disc to fix the mirror use a good blade in a scraper and some thinners just be carefull not to scratch the glass .....my local rac windscreens did mine for free

What a con!!! You pay all that dough and they stick a standard mirror in them. I just took it for granted that being a sport it would have had a sport type mirror. Learn something every day.
Cheers. I'm now off to convert one.

(not that I ever get to drive it much in the dark....

I'm sure there was an article on the e36 copue fsite where russ fitted an auto dipping mirror to is non auto dipping e36. And I don't recall him having any box of tricks to wire in either.
I'll go check.

On there under the techical section. Interesting though that he used an e36 mirror (not listed above as being compatible) yet the fixing on his screen looks identical.

Just checked the part number from the E36 mirror/screen fixing (51 31 8 145 530) and it
is the same as for the E30 cab, Z1 and all the others (and more) you listed above.
This means the auto dip mirror I have WILL fit the Zed, you CAN get one for your cab and make it different to having a set of map lights
Happy days......
P.S. Thanks for the link to the mirror fitting guide....

I can't be bothered to read the guide so it will probably say in there, but there is NO box of tricks, the circuit board is in the mirror housing and the mirror can be darkened by just using a PP3 battery!!
Basically all you need to get one running properly in an e30 is:
1, an ignition live (not permanent or your battery will be drained!)
2, an earth
3, a reverse signal (not sure if its +ve or -ve on E46) - this makes it go clear so you can see out of it when reversing!!

Went for the map lights and it's in and working on my convertible. Peice of p*** as well. Had to change the arm that fixes to the screen from my old mirror to the map light mirror. The only difference is that on the sport the wires run through the mounting arm. I've had to run a descreet back wire into the header rail trim but it looks fine.
Well chuffed.
I'd like to sort the wire out so it's a bit neater but I'm thinking on that one.
