According to the Haynes Manual, power steering fluid should be Dexron II type. a) Is this the best type?, b) Where will be the cheapest place to buy? (Halfords, BMW pats dept. Or a local car parts shop)

Dexron II or Dexron III will be fine. I usually get mine from Halfords or a local factors.

How do you drain the system to refill?

Pull one of the pipes off is about the only way really. Once its basically drained, wind the steering backwards and forwards to pump out as much of the old fluid from the rack as you can.
Also make sure you use new crush washers on any pipe joints you undo.
Ian.

Once you've flushed it, run it for five minutes, move the steering from lock to lock a few times, switch off, and do it all again.
Keep doing it until the fluid stays a nice red colour.
