E30 Cabriolet or Convertible

Don't mean to sound picky but why do people call their E30 Convertibles Cabriolets

To me, a BMW Parts Guru, when people say Cabriolet I automatically think of the Baur Conversion BMW used to offer and not the righteous Convertible.

I await your thoughts, insults etc :D :D

"Cabby" sounds better than "Conny"? What about Tourers and Tourings? or 2 doors and coupes?
I think cabriolet sounds better personally.

Because Kabriolett is German for convertible, I suppose. Just an anglicised version of this which abbreviates easily.

I always refer to my E30 as a Cabriolet even though the BMW brochure refers to it as a Convertible.

I was once told that a 'cabriolet' had a role over bar like the Golf, Escort and Astra and that a 'convertible' didn't, nonsense I know but I prefer convertible, sounds less gay IMO.

Actually the term Cabriolet is a form of convertible...as is roadster.
A Cabriolet is a convertible with roll up glass windows. A Roadster is a convertible with snap on side curtains.

Kabriolett
Funny, never seen a German writing that he has a "Kabriolett". Looks like that is a Kadett Cabriolet (Kadett=European version of the '83-'91 Astra).

In Germany and the Netherlands the Baur's are just called: Baur or Baur-Cabriolet. The normal one is just Cabriolet. Convertible is more for American cars.

Convertible has nothing to do with French cars; these are called Decapotable (full open car, for instance the old Megane) or Decouvrable (for the so called Cabrio-Limousine, cars like the Renault 4CV, Peugeot 203 or Citroen Visa, with 4 doors and softtop).

I prefer the term convertible, but for short I use Cab on the forum, and never use the word cabriolet.

1993 Lux Cab!...convertible!
