E30 Zone

Hello all. Some of you may have already heard about my car from BMW Car magazine entries or on other internet channels, but I'd like to introduce me and my car here.

I acquired the car as a toy and project in early January, in quite a state. It looked something like this:



The amount of things that were bust and have been fixed is almost incredible: reluctance to start, knackered diff, knackered wheels, rust holes, interior lighting not working, wash-wipe not working, central locking not working, seats not folding forwards... all in all a right old knacker!

Now though, all that has changed. There's still a long way to go, but the car now looks like this and is currently employed as my daily driver.

What was the cause of the poor staring in the end ? I don't recall ever reading about that.

I'm not sure Ian. It's still not the keenest starter in the world, but it doesn't feel like it won't start, and a couple of other E30 M3 owners I've spoken to have suggested that it's not entirely unusual.

The real turning point was when I changed the spark plugs - having just changed the fuel and air filters, and filled up with V Power.

What a shed.


P.S. - Tell Robin he's very naughty - we live in a respectable village you know. Sideways out of the car park at midnight will have had curtains twitching.

Well, I'm going to replace the clutch master cylinder soon, plus it needs a new exhaust system. Maybe a short shift kit as per the article on this site. At that point I hope to be able to chill out and enjoy it for a while, but I'm sure it's got other plans.

I'm sure you know this, but you'll either have to be especially lucky, or part with a lot of hard-earned to manage that. Probably both!

Hehe, yeah dont worry. Very aware of the prices they go for. Need to wait a bit but i might be tempted to take on a project. Dunno. Might be the best way to do it. Will see what happens. but at the moment iv got enough to keep me busy.lol.

I fitted the clutch master cylinder last night - what a bitch!

That's on my 'to do' list.

I changed the slave cylinder when I fitted the E36 box. On saturday I was ferreting around in the footwell as I was changing the accelerator cable (I needed to fit an E34 M50 one) and I noticed the clutch master is now weeping. Not looking forward to it to be honest. Haven't looked at the job fully yet, can you bleed it from the master end?

Sump, subframe, floor, I'm not fussy.

No, needs bleeding from the slave end. But then, you need to be under the car to undo the output pipe from the master cylinder. Might be different on a RHD car, but on my LHD car it's hard work getting tools past the steering column to operate that pipe join.

I reckon with two people and experience, it's an hour. Last night it took me 4 hours.

My slave is very tight against the transmission tunnel with the E36 box fitted. I'm pretty sure I have to remove it to be able to bleed it.

hi mate ! its sometimes worth unbolting the slave and letting it hang down to " gravity bleed it " before all that pedal pumping crap

Ste - if you attack it one weekend I'll gladly come and see if I can help - but I can't be sure I'll be much use. I'm not around this weekend though as I'm rallying with the Geordie...

nice project! where did you get hold of the e46 replica keys/ central locking?
