..and run it until it started coughing and spluttering, only £10 worth of diesel thankfully..

I THINK if he fills the tank up with petrol to dilute it, it should be fine

Correct or ??

friend of mine did the exact same thing with a renta van, once it had some petrol running through it it was fine again, should'nt be a major problem.

I just don't understand why I keep hearing of people doing this. I would think it would do no good at all and if it was me I would drain the petrol tank immediately after damaging the idiot who has made this most elementary mistake.

As long as its a very small amount you can get away sometimes with putting the wrong fuel in either.

It was his father, so I don't think "damaging" him is the way to go...

I would syphon the remaining diesel out of the tank then fill it with petrol and run it, maybe consider some sort of additive to clean anything which may have diesel stuck to it/clogged in it?

wrong

diesel in a petrol is baaad, diesel wont ignite on a flame front, works by compression ignition

petrol can be used in a diesel to stop it freezing in colder weather

Reminds me of the time the wife put diesel in our MR2.. Only £10 worth thankfully. She ran like a dog coming from the garage.

We put in another £30 to dilute and ran until nearly empty. Filled to the brim the next time and she passed an MOT (emissions included) on that tank, so no harm done :)

Petrol in a Diesel will usually cause problems because diesel also acts as a lubricant for the diesel pump which will sieze if run on petrol for to long. Ive had to replace pumps on mondeos, escorts etc in the past because of peoples mistakes!
Diesel in a petrol isnt as bad but wont burn properly and can cause the engine to run lean and melt piston/ burn valve etc.

Read what you just wrote.. A fuel pump not getting lubricated as it should is worse than melted pistons, burnt valves etc.. Er

You can put petrol in a diesel to lower the freezing point, we're not talking alot! Only a small ratio, whereas diesel in a petrol is a no no

Prolonged use of diesel in a petrol would do cause that much damage, someone i know used get alot of contaminated petrol (contained diesel) and run their daily hack on it till it died after about 1000 miles.
A diesel pump would seize long before that.

I should have been more clear on that!

An uncle borrowed my car and filled it with diesel :x ... It wouldn't start.... had to get it towed home... i drained it out ... filled it with petrol again and hey presto... a few coughs later she was running again!! I was so proud!! The thing was he swore blind that he put petrol in it and it was my fault for running it so low... on inspection of a picture his brother took of him with the car at the station... hes holding the diesel pump in my car!!!!! He he wasnt fam i'd have to ..... :-x
