From pistonheads

The Government might be looking into restricting the use of classic vehicles (cars over 15 years old) !!!!!
Please sign this petition to let then know what we think to that !!!!

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Classic-Cars

I expect its a waste of time as was the road pricing one but might be worth signing as it would effect nearly all E30 BMW's

I'd say thats more proof they want to kill off the internal combustion engine, i doubt it will get through any time soon because it will kill off all the small parts dealers and second hand cars will become worthless overnight.
The scary bit is the 10 year time frame. How much oil is left ?

Signed the petiton but these things seem like a waste of time. They are not within the framework of the current political system. Traditionally this sort of national issue is dealt with by lobbying local MPs (correct me if I'm wrong) and appealing directly to 10 Downing Street just gives them an idea of what scale of marketing they need to do, what kind of demographic rejects the proposal and what measures need to be taken to push it through.

I signed the petition but I think it may be a trap by the goverment so they can see how to form policy against public opposition.

Someone/some people need to get there priority right, theres much worse stuff then driving an older car that needs to be banned ect, there should be some sort of maintained law? i mean an older car that is basicly full of new parts and very well maintained or fully restored should be overlooked from this sort of utter shite ........ signed

When I drove to Germany 2 weeks ago in my cab to pick up my hardtop, I saw just 2 E30s in the who trip. here in the UK, I see 10 a day. It will be th same here too soon.

Whatever you do, turn up at the voting station and count youself in for a NO vote to Brown and Prescott and their anti E30 policys.

Actually, dont know what the alternative is...but worth a rant.

EU law takes presidence over UK law, so there isn't much point signing a petition on downing streets website. Anyway its EU law which will take forever to get agreed. They can't even ban crappy old style energy sucking light bulbs!

Rust will take most of our cars off the Road before this does!

Speak for yourself.

Many fully restored classics are running around with no rust

Have also signed the petition.

IMHO, in cities it's badly maintained diesel vehicles (in particular buses, vans, taxis, etc.) that cause most of the worst pollution. I personally try to avoid city driving whenever possible because it's such a hassle. They ought to provide more discounted cycle hire schemes.

another sig. added, why dont they push thru a limit on new car production then people would have to restore older cars and drive them more sympathetically therfor reducing emissions and increasing road safety...why not? TAX thats why :x

ditto the pollution cause by new car production is bad. I think a car has to drive something like 200,000miles before it creates the same pollution as did to build it!

but they wouldn't do that as that goes against our capitalist system!

Almost as stupid an idea of Germany saying it it considering putting in speed limits on the unrestricted Autobahn sections to reduce carbon emissions. What a load of old codswallop. The world has been mad for a very long time, but these notions are just plain ludicrous :x

Another interesting bit of info! The case against buying new cars is building.....
Simon13 wrote:but they wouldn't do that as that goes against our capitalist system!
Prescisely! .....And also the government take £1k's on every new car that's sold in taxes. IIRC, new car purchase taxes are like petrol taxes - tax on a tax!:cheese:

By which time supplies of BioFuel will be readily available and the Arabs will be scratching their arses with 2p pieces. The Germans were making synthetic diesel in 1944 and petrol made entirely without oil has been around for years. Just that in the next 30-40 years we'll need to start putting the plan into action.

So the London - Brighton runs will be interesting!

Another scheme that will never get off it's arse! Look at the ages of most school buses, tradesman vans etc etc

I would love to know how much 'pollution' is produced making a new car, compared to running a 'old' car. I'm sure you could run the old banger for many years and still produce less pollution overall.

Some interesting points there. I have often used the - its more efficient to recycle than buy new approach to justify keeping my 17 year old Supra and 22 year 944 on the road. Never been a fact based decision, just seemed sensible as well as being able to drive around in something that is a bit different. That is if we are still allowed to be different...!

Also think of the implication of a significant proportion of the population having to buy new. Could the manufacturers keep-up supply? If not properly thought out individuals could be unable to get to work as they no-longer had a legal car! Supply and demand would then take over and prices go up etc. Would also cause a huge spike in emissions due to the increased production.

The old fashioned 'light bulbs' as you call them are more efficient than most 'energy efficient' lamps....

The energy efficient lamps use less energy, but also give out less light... and produce little or no heat. The old fashioned lamps give a good light, aren't full of mercury vapour! and produce some back ground heat which can be useful too! Fill your house / office with energy efficient lamps and then turn the heating up to compensate, have we really saved anything?

This whole 'global warming' frenzy is a natural occurrence, there is **** all we can do about it, nature will sort it self out, more pollution is produced worrying about global warming than we will ever be able to save... rant over.

Grrrrrr
