MOT PASSED!

I'll let the list do the talking.

Offside front (floor) suspension component mounting excessively corroded.

N/S Front coil spring incomplete **DANGEROUS**

O/S Front coil spring incomplete **DANGEROUS**

N/S Rear coil spring incomplete ** DANGEROUS**

O/S Rear coil spring incomplete **DANGEROUS** Old news, time to re-fit those standard springs... temporarily.

N/S Front (link bar) anti roll bar rubber bush deteriorated.

O/S Front (link bar) anti roll bar rubber bush deteriorated.

N/S front position lamp not in good working order.

O/S front position lamp not in good working order. Do they mean sidelights?

O/S front direction indicator not working.

N/S Headlamp aim too low.

O/S (and pattern) headlamp aim too low. pattern??

N/S and O/S wiper blade deteriorated.

O/S rear passenger seat cannot be secured in upright position.

Exhaust system has a major leak of exhaust gases.

Exhaust system has a part missing.

Exhaust system noise is clearly in excess of that emitted by a similar vehicle fitted with a standard silencer in average condition. Bugger. there goes my 'weld some pipe onto the mid section if it passes emissions plan.

Nearside (sill) seatbelt anchorage is excessively corroded.

Advisory items:

6 Cylinder engine is fitted. :? why are they advising me of this? I know, I fitted the damn thing!

Emissions:

CO2 %: 1.021 (max 3.5)

HC ppm vol: 183 (max 1200)not bloody bad considering it only has half an exhaust!!

so.....it failed...

For everything except the exhaust, suspension and rear seat they quoted me 175 which isnt too bad I guess.

Its not that big a list.

When you take out the suspension (which I can replace with the standard springs for the retest), exhaust and seat, its just bushes, bulbs and welding....

and even with that 175 (which seems pretty reasonable to me tbh) the entire cost of the car, including the new engine, and the cost of a new backbox it will still be just over 650... which is about right for a 325 tourer with 12 months mot...

I am sorely tempted to buy bryn's tech 2 325 tourer and break this one though... but his is white

Or maybe buy his and steal all the bits I need then break his....

Apart from the two bits of welding and ARB bushes it's all a) obvious stuff like wiper blades and non working lights, which should have been sorted before MOT. b) minor adjustments, like headlamp aim and rear seat. (Beam pattern is probably bulb not seated properly), and c) Self inflicted bodged stuff like the springs and exhaust.

Sounds like you need a "friendly" MoT tester Munky. Either that or it's fiddling time. I bet you'll end up spending more time fiddling with silly little things like wiper blades, bulbs and seats than you did swapping an engine.

For goodness' sake stick with the black car if at all possible. Much nicer than white.

Yup, I personally dont think its all that bad, you dont buy a £240 car with low mot and expect it to pass!

blades and bulbs I can do myself, suspension I can do myself, rear seat I just need to take apart and find out why it isnt catching/buy another one off here.

Exhaust isnt a bodge though, its just got no backbox yet. Unfortunately the sidelights may mean new bloody light units as I think they failed cos I sprayed the reflector black when i smoked the lights, but I have a spare set anyway so thats no biggie.

Its all minor stuff, apart from the major stuff I already knew about. This test was just to find out how bad it really was, and I was expecting worse.

I do want to stick with the black one. And probably will, I'm looking to buy bryns anyway, to break, we are in the negotiation stages but I have to wait for some money to arrive before i can do anything and I dont expect him to hold onto it until then if anyone else offers.

This was done at a 'friendly' mot station but as he said 'It aint exactly subtle, if you get pulled and they see its just been mot'd my testers licence is history'

Fiddly things I can do, bushes and welding I'll leave to the pro's.

This was a 316 wasn't it? Have you changed the V5? I never realised they checked for this, lucky I got mine changed not so long ago!

I've sent off the v5 with the new engine capacity/number on it but havent had the new one back. It did confuse me a bit that they advised me on it.... normally advisory's are things it could fail on next time :?

Oh dear,oh dear...Looks like your DIY mods aint quite up to standard!!You have to remember that the test stations computer talks to its mates at DVLA,thats why the tester has mentioned the engine swap.Try to be a little more subtle..my 2.7 in a 320 arouses no suspicion at all..

Unlike you, I'm no criminal. My engine change has been declared, its not my fault the dvla are all retarded and it takes them 3 weeks to change the details.

The only only other bodges that caused it to fail is the suspension and lack of exhaust, both of which are very easily remedied and I knew about them, all the other stuff is bmw's fault for making a car that rusts and not using poly bushes.

On a side note... Stripped cars pass mot's.. Only the seats mounted in the car have to have seatbelts etc, so as a quick fix to the rear seat not clipping into the upright position, can I just take it out?

woo! Just been told by someone that has one seat in their civic, and someone else that only has front seats that if you take out seats it will still pass....bye bye rear bench..

Is there a db limit or something? Only mine's stupidly loud now, if it's going to fail I'll have to fix that.

There's always been a db limit. iirc its 98db @ 3000rpm but its down to VOSA/the police to enforce that law isn't it?

Mine is absurdly loud as its only the centre section and downpipes... but this has confused me a tad as i've heard louder and never heard of a loud exhaust being an mot fail.

Just found this:
b. assess subjectively the effectiveness of the silencer in reducing exhaust noise to a level considered to be average for the vehicle
'Assess subjectively'; what you need is a tester who likes loud exhausts!

Also:
b. a silencer in such a condition, or of such a type, that the noise emitted from the vehicle is clearly unreasonably above the level expected from a similar vehicle with a silencer in average condition
From here.

interesting stuff, will check with the local boy racers to see who they all use as some of their exhausts are a hell of a lot louder than mine is.

The second quote could the be government saying that aftermarket performance exhausts are a thing of the past....

I know a couple of people round here have been given asbo's because their exhausts are considered antisocial. I dont want a f*cking asbo, but I do want an exhaust that makes small children cry when i gun it (as mine has on one occasion  ).

Its a w.i.p.

I plan to take it entirely back to standard, put it on some bbs rims and never drive it so I can preserve the timeless classic that the e30 truly is. Image

I have just bought a very high spec 325 touring (i dont waste my time with 4 pots! :) ) I am in the process of removing the nasty rock hard snakes c0ck spec new bilstein suspension and returning the car to standard, it will them get a good going through and will be served to an appreciative victim for £2500. What are you going to do with your frag Munky ?

Ps suspension will soon be for sale. Bought from BMW dealer f+r thick tube bilsteins and BMW sport springs, rears 1000 miles, fronts unused, i will post up part numbers later ! :)

Each to their own, I buy my cars to drive, not wrap in cotton wool in the hope of making a profit.

I intend to fix it and drive it until it either fails another mot, or falls apart on a track somewhere. Then break it/scrap it and replace it with another one, they're not exactly rare.

The idea was to 'buy it, drift it, break it, scrap it' but unfortunately it broke before I got to drift it much so I'm going the route of 'buy it, break it, fix it, drift it, break it, scrap it'

I drive my cars as well , thats why i like them to drive properly and everything to work ! :) And as for the igmony of one of my cars failing an mot , thankfully i cannot recall such an instance .
Go on munky, show me what a failure sheet (or in the case of your turd , several !) looks like ? :)

Just the 2 sheets this time. And no, they're mine. You're into e30's, I'm sure it wont be long before you see a failure sheet.

The peg that the rear seat back locks onto is eccentric, so it's position is adjusted by turning it. This is all that's normally required to fix a non latching touring seat.
