E30 Zone

I know very little about engines and conversions so bare with me! how much more bhp do you get from a 2.7? what sort of speed can you reach in a sport with a 2.7 engine? money wise how much would it cost?

i am not looking to convert my sport, i just wouldnt touch it! But in the next year or so, another sport could be on the agenda! if so, i want a 2.7 engine.....i know there are some experts on here so give me the low down on 2.7 engines in sports


Did anyone on the zone own this 2.7 litre sport, it was brought out of england to northern ireland.....

a properly built 2.7 aveerages bout 220 bhp
but the whole point of the 2.7 is torque

they are a whole new animal compared to a 2.5

im gonna be doing mine very soon
cost your looking around a £1000 maybe more depending how right you wanna build it

if you really went to town on the build i could see it costing upto 2k to build
especialy if your not mechanicaly minded and having to pay labour plus machining charges etc

I know a few guys who are pretty good with engines, they could hopfully help me out with it. If that was out the window, i dont think i would bother....would just cost too much in the end. Plus by the time i start this project......it all depends if i can get trade insurance or not, if i cant get trade i wont be able to insure a modded 325i.......crazy money over here for insurance! i would just love a 2.7 litre tech 1, sitting beside my tech 2 sport

Daz you say a proper built 2.7 averages 220bhp, but who on the zone has actually got that proved. This therefore doesn't make it an average figure. If I was to guess what an average 2.7 makes it would be 190bhp.

I hear what you are saying about a properly built one, off the top of my head temple's is the only one that will come close to 220bhp. Jimbobs old one was proper and that made 200bhp.

I think £1000 would get you 190bhp

£2000 Would get you 200bhp

And serious wedge would get you to 220bhp.

i meant proper as in decent maching /6 branch /cammed up

not the old slap a 320head on bullshit that so many do

also bare in mind that a proper remap rather than chucking any old chip in will release more power

i dnt think 220 is that difficult at all its just most 2.7s are built on tightarse budgets

i,ll be seriously pissed off if mine dosent get close to 220 when done

but also as said its all about the torque with a good 2.7

for my 2.7 i had it all done professionally and put no work into it myself whatsoever. neither did i supply any parts. The bottom end was reconditioned and fitted with a new crank and custom pistons. i know very lttle about about this sort of stuff which is why i payed for it to be done by someone else. the top half of the engine wasnt touched. i got a tad under 200hp and over 200ftlb.
Tbh this lot cost me over 3k, which im sure someone will say is well overpriced..

To be honest if the amount of M50/M52 information was around when I did my 2.7 two years ago I wouldn't have bothered with the old M20.

Iain's car is exceptional, end of. All the work he has done has been to a very high standard and took him a LONG time to do. Daz, don't get your hopes up mate. Not sounding harsh at all - just look at all the other 2.7's about, even the genuine Alpina and Hartge's - not many make near 220bhp, the only one I can think of is Karan's old one but that figure was from when it was professionally built many years back when it was Ste's car. Like I said, Iain's is exceptional and stands a mile out from the crowd in my opinion.

Its been proven in the past that it takes thousands to get 220bhp etc.

Karans car had everthing. Big cam, maf, headwork, six branch, remap etc and a very expensive manifold. It took thousands of pounds to get it that way. And that was slightly less than that bhp figure.

A home built engine is probably around 190bhp as jon has said above.

I got her from Wales about 3 years ago but didnt come with a 2.7 at the time. I did the 2.7 engine at the start of last year

Cost me about 1500 for all the parts but then i did re-build the bottom end with new bears and all

M50 Daz, can pick up a donor for under £250!

TPhat was done by bexleys. Top company with 6branch/ms/cams you should be seeing 220.

It takes a fair bit of cash to get to 220hp

I'm sure karans car was 2.7 and about 220hp??

Lexus/Toyota Soarer 2.5 Tiwn Turbo. 280bhp with a remap 300+

Similar style to the Supra but cheaper id imagine and very reliable.

Not many people bother with 2.7's these days. Its all about the 3.5 M30 and if not that the 2.8 litre lump from the E36. Some even put the S50 M3 lump in!
