I Love LSD

Everyone says LSD's make a car's handling more predictable/safer.

I'd have to disagree in some cases.

For example, when pulling out of a junction sometimes one wheel spins, the LSD then transfers power to the other wheel so they either both spin or neither spin, if they both spin it can send you completely offcourse!

At least with an open diff, the one wheel will just keep spinning and it won't send you in the opposite direction when it chooses and how quickly it chooses.

You've gotta be quick with an LSD sometimes!

Just pointing out to those who say it makes the car perfectly predictable etc that it's not necessarily true!

I love LSD and I love the unpredictability!!

Yep. :D

They're predictable enough, as long as you know it's there you're laughing. (Literally sometimes). 8)

I totally agree.....I think this has been taken wrongly!

I'd have to show someone what I mean rather than explain in writing!

I love using my LSD drifting, and Donuts like at Ace Cafe, but that's just for the crowds!

mine just let one wheel spin up the other night (when i was showing rare and swirlyE30 the benifits of 6 cylinders :D ) round a mini roundabout i just thought that the clutch plates were getting knackered or should it do that?? I know what your saying Dave but its only in the dry isnt it? Hangs fine in the wet though yeah?

they all do this sometimes..... particularly if u really swing it round in 1st gear... or the inside comes off the ground.... thats the prob with only 25%lockup

u may find getting the wheels spinning in a straight line easier first then turning if u wanna do doughnuts....

i find pulling out of T junctions a 5000rpm in 2nd is the most predictable... you KNOW you'll be going very sideways! automotive poetry in motion!

If the spinning wheel is spinning too freely, there's nothing to make the LSD wake up.
.... thats the prob with only 25%lockup
You have to remember that the 25% relates to torque, not 'friction free' motion, more than 25% will lock more readily, but not necessarily always.

i was waitin for u to come up with the :D  knowledge....!!

our resident drift guru!

so how can one overcome this as i find that as i have short suspension travel the inside can come off the ground and spin the damn inside up....

Thanks for clearing that up for me guys i dont often give it some stick in the dry after my mate gave his old motor (M535i E28) a bit of stick pulling out onto a round about and tearing the prop like a bake bean tin!! Its now always in the back of my head all it takes is for the rears to grip a bit too much

Providing the spinning wheel is taking some torque (obviously it takes some through friction even when raised), an uprated LSD will get the other wheel working. (An uprated ARB may help keep the wheel down.)

We have similar problems. We need rear dampers with standard extended travel.

I can't find heavy duty sussy that isn't designed for lowered cars. :(

I've got some Bilstein 'Sportline' dampers that are standard length but poxy strength. I've also got a PSS9 kit that is good for strength, but 50mm less fully extended travel on the front and 25mm on the back.

I can get a longer replacement insert for the front, but not one that has the damper adjustability that the PSS9 has.

Any ideas?

Sorry, but it was a bit girlie anyway. Image

cheers mate

i have just fitted thicker hartge anti roll bars..... really does help drift!

will try some doughnuts later and see but 2nd and 3rd gear drift is much better now!

cheers lsdman!

Mine was horrible to drive when I first got it because the LSD was worn out so sometimes it would lock, sometimes it wouldn't, and sometimes it would lock and then unlock, or the other way around, halfway through a corner. I drove it like that at a few dirt Autocross events and it was, 8O .

Now I have got it fixed the only time it is a problem is around really tight roundabouts, mostly the ones with loose gravel on the inside. If I go sharply to 3/4 or more throttle the inside wheel will spin for a fraction of a second and the back will start to slide so I start to put on opposite lock. But then the LSD locks and all of a sudden I have heaps of traction, the opposite lock is uneccessary, and I start turning in that direction :( . Just something I have to get used to I suppose, or take it easier on those roundabouts.

Shouldn't have started this one should I

Like the title change too

I love driving with LSD, I love drifting and so on! Anyone who doubts that is welcome to come for a drive in my car

I was merely pointing out that LSD sometimes causes more problems than an open diff. :flipbird:

That's cos you've got >200bhp :)

How about this then fcukers!!....

Going up a wet hill a bit quickly, change from first to second....plant your foot, with an LSD (it's awesome fun), the back end slides about......which for someone not expecting it, is dangerous....however, with an open diff, chances are, just one wheel will spin, meaning you won't loose the arse end on a straight road!

LSD can solve and cause problems for different types of people.

Still getting used to mine. Some times it wont step out in the dry and the other times it just shoots out.
I need somewhere nice and open to throw the car about to see how it reacts but I cant find anywhere.

i love my lsd . iam not sure if its in working order , it wines above 110 -120 and ive notice pulling away at t junctions it somtimes spins one wheel. but last week at a wet nurburgring it was the nuts , sidways in the f1 cuircit and sideways under changing down gear under brakeing , dangerous but fun ,
but you gotta drive well in the wet at speed or your be unbolting the lsd from a smashed up car !

who knows about repair kits for them and how much ?

u'll need t get the plates from bmw at get all the loads etc set up right from a pro diff builder i rreckon, its one of those specialist things...

I've been told that you can't buy the plates from BMW.

We use Atlas ZF kits that have 4 plates, (you only need 2 plates unless you modify the LSD). The 4 plate kits are Ԛ£120.

I was down my local cruise on sunday, and there were some big power rwd cars i.e. cosworth one e30 m3 too, no 1 at all was doin nowt, so i started giving the car some stick i cudnt beleive people were clapping after my donuts (it was mostly arse out sliding, just about!)

no one else didnt even bother, the guy in the m3 done one slide and thats it, my mate was saying all the 'oh your well good at it' etc and i said you should meet my mates of e30zone ;)

point is if i had and lsd i know i cud have been giving the crowd and maself much better donuting action

LSD's are a must!

Hi Guys,

Can i ask a really stupid question how do you know if your car is fitted with this or not ???

If you jack up both rear wheels, try to spin one, if the other turns in the same direction then you have an LSD, if not then it's an open diff.

Alternatively, try to do some donuts! You CAN donut with LSD!

i have to dispute this point. i used to have a 170bhp 2.1 litre mk2 escort rs2000 with an open diff. with a whole 900kg to play with and only 35% of that on the rear wheels, donuts aren't a problem... even in third, in the dry!

that said, it would have been sooooooooo much better with a lsd!

well i understand it in rwd 'scort! its lighter and the scorts run 13s too, plus 170bhp! and the engine dont wegh as much as a six pot matey

love the old scorts 8)
