I've got a set of Magnecor leads on my M20, iirc they cost about £80 and come with a lifetime guarantee.

I've got Magnecor on the Mk1 - very high quality bit of kit - recommended.

One of the leads was very very slightly short - I rang them to make sure I had the correct set - I did, but they sent me a slightly longer lead for free which arrived the next day - you can't get better service than that.

PS they also put numbers on each lead in the set so you don't get them mixed-up - it was my number 3 lead that was slightly too short.... when my specially made-up replacement lead arrived, they had actually bothered to put a number 3 on it!!!

If you looking for cheap and cheerful OE replacement try Unity Motors.

i wouldn't bother with anything other than the BMW ones. the only one i've ever had problems with had recieved spanner-monkey damage and was half cut through.

magnecor ones aren't as well made and i had several fail on my MK2 RS2000. they do send out new ones under warranty but it was a pain in the arse when i broke down with no phone reception, in the middle of nowhere in the wee small hours and had to walk for 45 mins to get reception to call Mr AA out... the're also a lot easier to tear (me being the spanner monkey here!)

BMW ones are pricey though but to be honest they last long enough to be worth the money. that said, i replaced mine with used ones from a fellow zoner as i'm tight!

Cheap and chearful.

There's 2 sets available, one with and one without the sensor.

Is this sensor required or can it be left off? I have a set of leads for mine without sensor, but my car uses the ones with sensor?

No sensor is not required. It's just for the diagnostic plug for the timing.

I'd go with magnecor. They are far better quality than the oe ones.

Why does it need new leads?

The best leads for any E30 are the OE ones.
Magnecor are good, but OE is better. Breaker ones will be fine - OE leads last for ever unless damaged by some muppet impersonating a mechanic.
