You have to have the British Standard number, the name of the manufacturer and the name and postcode of the plate supplier......

http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/leaflets/v796.pdf

I think the rules for you are the same - you'll have to contact DVLNI if you are worried

UNIQUE DESIGNS are the only company so far i feel could make that plate for me. they said you wouldnt post to northern ireland :? as i said, i just want a standard plate, nothing fancy! i get pulled enough by the police. standard text/font, but on the left of the plate where you would often find the "euro band" i want the bmw and alpina logo's and a mtechnic logo in there aswell.

cheers for the help

All E30s were made long before these regulations were introduced, so as long as the typeface and spacing were legal when the car was first registered, who's to say when the plates were made?

most police wont try to do you if the font and spacing is the same, if you piss them off, they will use any excuse! i want to tint every window in my sport limo black, would love to do it, i think it would look the balls with the alpine white body, but i know it would only be a matter of days/possibly weeks before i got taken into the station!

...because any plate made today will have the 'current' font (which is narrower than the old font) and so the cops could be arsey if they wanted to; internet/foreign-made plates might have any old font. I'm just giving the 'whiter-than-white' legal picture. :D

aye like i said, the plates i go for have to be 100% legal, my motor is registered as a company car threw my dads business, so if i get in shit. he gets the fines or boloxing by the police!!!!!

According to this German plates are legal. As we are part of the EU and plate style that is legal in the EU and has a similar performance quality, i.e. it can be read easily, it is legal.

The actual piece of legislation can be found here.

erm the Dubmeister article is dated 1st Dec 2005.... so I'm afraid I'd treat that with caution.

The Government document 'seems' to be saying you can use a Euro-plate, but it must have a 'UK' in the Euro-symbol box, and NOT say a 'D'... but the document isn't very well written

I didn't realise the date on the Dubmeister article, but:
Statutory Instrument 2001 No. 561 wrote:VEHICLES REGISTERED ON OR AFTER 1ST JANUARY 1973 AND BEFORE 1ST SEPTEMBER 2001 (OPTIONAL SPECIFICATION)

1. The plate must be made of reflex-reflecting material which, as regards its construction, colour and other qualities, complies with the requirements of -

(a) the British Standard Specification for reflex-reflecting number plates, published on 11 September 1972 under the number BS AU 145a[14], or

(b) any other relevant standard or specification recognised for use in an EEA State and which, when in use, offers a performance equivalent to that offered by a plate complying with the British Standard specification,

and which, in either case, is marked with the number (or such other information as is necessary to permit identification) of that standard or specification.

2. Where the registration mark is displayed on the front of the vehicle, it must have black characters on a white background.

3. Where the registration mark is displayed on the back of the vehicle, it must have black characters on a yellow background.
Where does it say it has to have the UK mark? Personally, I believe that this is a loop hole to allow foreign drivers to drive their cars on UK roads without prosecution. Which means that you can drive legally with a German style plate, the fact that you may not be German or have the car registered doesn't seem to be stipulated (well I haven't found and obviously could be wrong).

I only question it because I have been observed to be driving a car with German plates and number of times, even pulled over on a few and only once have I been told that it is illegal. I realise that the disgression of an officer is at play here, some may not care at all. But, I also know of another person who has asked about the plates being legal and been informed that they are because his car was registered before 2001.
