add another v to 'vtec' and turn both v's upside down, you have your answer!

There both good in there own way i guess but Ive never owned a vtec to give a proper balanced viewpoint.
If you have had both, which did you prefer?
Personally i prefer the e30 over most equivalent jap cars as the e30 (for me) has more character, more solid and sounds awesome if we are talking 6 pot.
Don't forget this is a BMW forum so the answer is going to be pretty much e30

Depends what you want....
Jap:
Uncompromised reliability
Awesome noise
or
BMW:
Cracked heads
60's technology
On the other hand....
Boring styling (Jap)
Old school cool (BMW)
E30s except for a few, aren't that quick by todays standards, they are a cool car however!
I'm bored of this argument! I'm fighting (well I can't be bothered anymore!) a loosing battle on a BMW Forum!

Engine wise id rather go for a Honda than a BMW lump, Honda engine tech is probably the best in the world and they've made production engines like no other....look at the failure rate of Vanos Vs vtec..Honda nicasil bores dont flake away "due to poor fuel quality"...
Sadly, the cars are awful to look it,excluding the NSX and the new CT-R maybe, so it'd have to be a BM.

If you go for a car for looks then you are a pure poser! Simple. You sit inside it!
Maybe you look at your car out the window, but driving experience 'should' be the deciding factor when buying a car, is it ever? Is it bollox! Posing nation of tossers trying to make up for having small willies!
bryang...not getting at you personally, just making a point. (Badly!)

my mate had a CRX vtec and we had a little blat down the 505 1s and there wast anything in it at all. his was just making lots of racket, but there is more you can do with the honda over the e30, and as dave has show us you car get around the track in the v tec in good time. if you go for the e30 you need to look about as there is a lot of dogs out there, and its easy to get a shit one.

Honda Vtec engines are known for its reliability and its a fact that out all their production line of vtec engines none of them have ever been blown in terms of blowing the gasket. i still find it pretty hard to believe. i know their suppose to be driven hard and their torque is amazing but none of their engines have ever been blown. When i heard that i wanted to get a vtec and drive it in 1st gear on the m25.
Although their engines run forever i dont think their body work can keep up with they are quite rapid too aswel beause of their light body. But engine parts are bloody expensive unless their are honda forums.
Although the Mtec is straight through power from 1000 rpm to red, whereas vtec power kicks in after 4000rpm, and lets get it straight i cant wait that long. Looks wise BMW always looks hot compared to a granny honda.
Bottom line is "BMW is the Ultimate Driving Machine"

I agree mate and owning a Hayabusa shows I like performance more than looks...but to "enjoy" owning a vehicle for most of us(unless its a focused track vehicle) its gotta have the complete package, performance and style.
The new CT-R website is great, some good vids as well, have a browse

Oi Dave!
Where's the awesome noise for the 6 pot!!?
The Vtec lads round here just a slap a noisy exhaust on their car which they then have to get up to 6k for the added bonus of vtec, which is rather annoying

us BMW owners can do that at 2k thanks to the straight 6 under the hood.

6 pots can sound good, don't get me wrong, but ask Demlot, a VT on full chat sounds like a carbon airbox'd E30 M3!
If you think VTEC is annoying, then you need to have a go in my car!

I'm sure it is a hoot to drive dude, I'm fully aware from your trips to the Ring
It's just annoying when the 3 lads parked over the in corner decide to leave the car park at full chat, it's bloody LOUD lol!

Although I agree with the sentiment, you are not really comparing like with like.
BMW's Vanos system in general is very reliable. You rarely hear of M50/52 engines with Vanos problems. It's the continuously variable dual Vanos on the 3.2 Evo engine that has reliability issues, and this is a totally different type of system to the Vtec which basically engages a different set of cam lobes at a predetermined RPM.
You also need to rag the Vtec to make swift progress, but not generally with a BMW engine.
Ian.

Recently my girlfriend wanted to buy a car and I wasn't going to get involved because her old man really likes to get his oar in. Over 30 years at Vauxhall does that to you I suppose, he wanted her to have a corsa or a tigra but luckily she asked me to find her a few cars that she might like.. No Bmw's allowed so Audi a3 or a Corrado an Alfa Gtv and then I thought about the Mk2 Honda CRX a great looking fast reliable car, She didn't like it but she did like the MK3 CRX the one with the fold away roof!! it's the VTI model and it's a uk car and boy is it fun, I only go out in it at night because it really is a Girls car but once you hit 6200k it just screams louder and pulls harder all the way to 8400k it really is a quick little car.. build quality of the interior is shocking but 160bhp out of a 1.6 is where the money went and on that bloody roof!
The worst thing about the car is trying to convince my Girlfriend that she can safely use the throttle a bit more before changing up... 3000k then she changes gear there's another 5000k to go for Gods sake...

I see your point Ian but as both systems are the manufacturers take on variable valve timing I thought it was a fair comparison.
Yes, you've gotta rag them more but generally the BMW engines with Vanos are much larger in CC...
I guess it comes down to driving styles as to which you prefer, you've got to admire Honda's engineering thou and their bikes are far from granny/grandad mobiles

the vtis are very fast and light but you cant really beat the feel and original sound of the bmw including its shape and old skool character, plus you can cruise round town still hearing the great sound from asix pot and feel the torque wheras the vti you have to put your foot down to feel and hear the great sound of vtec

exactly which models are you considering?id agree honda are second to non with regards to reliability on the newer models but is this still the case with older cars?my last car was a toyota and hardly had any issues with breakdown etc,but when something did occassionally go wrong the repair bills were horrendous compared to the bmw.if your more into the bodykits and spoilers scene then id go with the honda as bmws look wrong with all the add ons
