E30 Zone

hi has anybody ever heard of welding a diff up iv been questioned a few times about getting a diff welded does anyone know if this is possible and what the outcome would be and the advantages and dissadvantages cheers

welded diffs are the bomb if ur after the following:

- massive, easily achievable sideways
- good predictability when sideways
- the cool scuffing noise made by the tyres when ur running one.

what exactly are u wantin from it? i do em a lot for sierras etc for guys on www.trampdrift.com

basically u weld the crown gears together, and weld them to the 'cage' as its known. theres a guide on trampdrift so click away and look for diff article on main page!

Welding the diff would mean that both rear wheels would turn at the same speed thus negating the effect of the differential. That means awesome straight line performance but going round bends will be tyre shreddingly painful as the two wheels try to turn at different speeds. Best to resort to a Limited Slip Diff, standard Sport diffs come in 25% lockup for road use iirc, also they can be re shimmed with more or less plates to give varying amounts of lockup.

after reading quite a few posts here about this, my views on this are that people will only do this for track as the day-to-day ride is poor. but don't hold me to it, i don't really know much mechanically.

why not get an LSD of course if funds allow...

well i do quite a bit of drifting for show purposes and i have just blew a diff i replaced it straight away and all is good but people keep sayin get the diff welded and i just wanted to know why thanks guys

any body know of anyone who does the diff rebuilds with more lock up? I have an Lsd on mine but i think its crap,they certainly need more than 25% lock up.

A user called M3Compact might be able to give some advice as well, I remember a while back he was quite a legend. He did a straight swap with me for an LSD and also helped a friend find a place to get a Skyline diff sorted!

if u drift then a welder is ur best friend, i know many guys, couple are competing in eurodrift in 2007, who all sware by welders.

imo they are a hell of a lot better for drifting!! actually prefer em to lsd as theyre always locked, uno where u are.
