Can you tell if an LSD is fitted without taking it out and looking ?Local lad scrapping a 6 cylinder 2.0 reckons it has one fitted.

Yup - easiest way is to jack the car up on the diff so both rear wheels are of the ground (remember to chock the front wheels) Have the car out of gear with the handbrake off, spin one of the rear wheels, of the other one spins in the same direction - it is an LSD!

Both wheels should spin the same way with a Lsd

When I posted the 'yup' was in response to the initial post, not the advice from the first chap!

Would jacking one side up and trying to spin the wheel by hand not give you the same conclusion?
Doesnt spin by hand - LSD
Does spin - open

Douzeper's right,
If the car's got a slipper, and you only jack one wheel, then it's difficult to turn. as it's pretty much linked to the other wheel that's not moving. Not impossible to turn though, I can turn mine (just) by hand. I think they can get easier to turn as the diff wears. Mine's rebuilt less than 5k ago FWIW.

Can't you just fill an open diff with thick grease to get the LSD effect?

'ss easy. An LSD links the two wheels together.
Stick car in neutral
Disengage handbrake
Retrieve car
Chock front wheels
Disengage handbrake, check for neuttral.
Jack up ONE read wheel.
If it is very difficult to turn you've got an LSD - as it's trying to turn the other wheel
If it moves pretty easily you haven't, as propshaft just spins.

yes sounds right or u could just toe and heel it n find out if both wheels light up or spin her round see if it goes round easy enough as u can normaly tell if u try and donut as it will push on or you can hear 1 wheel spin
