Evening all.

Just picked up a fairly clean '90 325i that we are thinking of using for a few track days. Its already been fitted with an lsd and a -40mm springs and shocks kits. Are there any free or cheap mods that are worth doing? Is this model re-mapable with a flasher unit? and if so where will we find a map to download??

cheers all

Is it chipped? Get a fairly agressive chip for track use, should add some more horses and will iron out any nasty flat spots you dont want on the track.

You will fall off a standard 325i seat on the corners by the way :o

Remove carpet, all insulation around bulkhead and transmission tunnel, sound system, headlining, doorcards, spare wheel, boot trim, glove box, swap to manual windows etc etc

Car will now go and sound much faster!

Disconnect the two water pipes which go to and from the throttle body and join the together.

It's supposed to keep it warm in the winter but you should be able to remove it without any problems.

what does this do performance wise? :? i think the best 'free' mod that will increase performance is to strip the car off all unnessessary weight.this will also have the bonus of making you some cash back if you sell the bits allowing you to buy more power upgrades winkeye

This keeps the intake air cool; heating it apparently costs you a couple of bhp! Mind you, I recently read somewhere else that manufacturers warm the manifolds to improve economy... :?

put the fat f**ker on a diet! Carpet is really quite heavy, cheapest way of making it go alot quicker with no outlay!

£300 will secure some h&R anti roll bars and a strut brace

should handle nicely then

as above... plus bin the windows completely, keep the front screen and fit perspex, ditch the window lift mechanism.

ditch the roof lining, weld the sunroof and ditch the opening mechanism. ditch all the seats bar the drivers, and get a light weight bucket (also will let you fit a 4 or 5 point harness. ditch the wipers and window wash system, if you run in the rain get a single wiper or leave drivers side only.

dont bother with changing the fuel tank as its in the perfect location but do carry a fuel can and only fill enough for your session, no more (fuel is heavy)

if you can get a sport box stick that in (lower ratio 123 gear = better for trackwork) if you can afford get a racing clutch plate less slip means more power to your wheels

after that change the pedal box as BMW system makes heal and toe difficult due to throttle pedal position and casue they pivot from the bottom of the pedal not the top.

fit an E36 steering rack and do away with the power steering pump/system

all above should not cost the earth (except for pedal box) and as above deffo go for ARB and strut braces front and rear

Apart from all that, you should be ready to race at Le Mans in an E30 :D

yes you can, its called porting but its a specialist job and needs to be done by someone who knows what they are doing or else you will end up with gas flow problems which can loose power rather then gain. plus bigger inlet ports mean bigger valves, then you need to get the gas out which means bigger outlet ports, then you need to move the gasses futher down so you need a bigger/better shaped headers/exhaust..... ah yeah you need to put more fuel and air in so a bigger AFM and bigger injectors now the ECU wont be correct so a remap or more likely a stand alone ECU......thus the conclusion is this is not a cheap mod!!!!

perhaps what you mean is to remove the head and polish the inletport/outlet port/head combustion chamber (called decoking) and regrind the valves, this is not a mod as such but certainly will get an older engine to run a bit quicker, not a five minute job however!!

Apart from all that, you should be ready to race at Le Mans in an E30
he would need a roll cage and fire supression system...but would be a bloody good idea!!!

you may be thinking about people with a M20B20 (320) putting a M20B25 (325) Throttle body on the car to give the painfully sluggish 320 a bit of a boost. to do this properly you must bore out the entry to the inlet manifold of the 320 so it is the same diameter as the throttle body of the 325.

boring out the other end (i.e the bit attched to the cylinders) of an inlet manifold and not boring out the corresponding inlet port would again disrupt gas flow and make th engine slower..... sorry mate not a cheap mod!!! but if you try it successfully dont tell anyone (except me by PM!!!)..instead make millions on ebay!!! :D
