E30 Zone

I have posted about this in another section, but I think it has been overlooked

Here is project 318is.




It belongs to my father in law. It is undergoing some restoration. I have printed off the info for the Z3 gear linkages, but he has another slight problem.

There are a couple of bits that need welding, including the foot wells. Does anyone know if you can get replacement panels for the passenger/driver foot well?

Any advice much appreciated.

as far as i know, there is such a thing as a replacemen panel, however, im not sure of te availability on the part. the best place to ask about this would be a dealers

i just looked quickly on realoem.com, but i couldnt find anything listing a replacement floor pan

a good person to ask would be Dips346, as he is a bodywork specialist on here...

He added the 318is to his collection 2 years ago. He used it once then put it in the garage until now

looking like you've made some progress so far! what do you have planned?

The gist is he wants an immaculate 'tweaked' 318is. So lowered, 15" sport wheels, Z3 short shift, front fogs etc. He wants to restore the rest to standard - just for pleasure.

Very impressive. I bought a 318is 2 weeks agoand can't wait to get it running again.
With regards to the floorpan, I had a similar problem on my 320i. If the area it is on is relatively flat I would suggest trimming some 1mm steel to fit. A Panel would be better if you have curves and shapes to deal with if you are not confident panel beating.

I had a 318is and a bit of advise i would give is take the rocker cover off and tighten up all the bolts on the cam pulleys.On my one they came undone over the years and a bolt went down inside the block.Luckily i managed to get it out as when it came off it hit the pin on the pulley and this was ripped off and hit the cam position sensor cutting the engine out.Had it not it could have caused a lot of damage.

No problem .Thats a nice looking 318is and the best colour to have one in.Mine was red as well and i spent a lot on it.Sadly a lad doing 100mph in a 30 crashed into it(t boned in the drivers door) and that was the end of that.Good luck with the project.

Sadly Hammo, I sold the M3 a few years ago. It was at Donnington show actually. When I had the car, I already had a modified Volvo 850 T5 that the wife used, we had our 2nd child on the way. At the same time we moved into a house that cost 3 times more than the one we was living in! At the time we were 21 and the insurance and running costs were mental —a so the Volvo and Beemer went. I am back in a T5 now ironically but only a shitter with an RICA ECU [304hp]. The wife has a Honda Odyssey [6 seat people mover] —a so I am keeping the cost of living down as we have 3 children now —a lol.

So I am hoping to buy this IS of the old man when he is done as it will be a real minter. I recon up to £2k is a fair price but we will see

Are you doing all the engine stuff yourself at home??

I have a iS engine sitting at home too, and i'm yet to start on it properly have started by taking off the inlet and that side of the engine, but have hit a brickwall at the moment due to being ill...it's covered up and on a pallet, will it be ok out in the cold??

I;m keeping a keen eye on this thead...good work so far

It is my father in law doing all the work, I just shout orders and take pictures.

Engines are best left somewhere dry, as long as it is well covered it should be ok. Ideally you want to steam clean it, or get some GUNK and use a regular hose and a scrubbing brush. A gasket set maybe required, but so far I recon the engine is pretty solid for 147k

My plan was to replace most of the gaskets on it anyhow...It covered up with some proper stuff, so hopefully should be ok...Got some gunk, but using a hose, wouldn't any water get inside?

seriously, though.... I would have had the tires unmounted from the rim before painting them. Every time a tire gets changed now,the paint is going to flake off the edge......... atleast that is what my friend experienced when he tried to do it the "easy" way......

this thread reminds me, i need to start my own engine build project thread soon!!
