shell v-power petrol?

ive just noticed that shell have replaced their optimax petrol with a new version called v-power.it has an octane rating of 99 compared to the 98 of optimax.has anyone seen any tests as to how that affects the performance as i remember seeing tests that proved optimax gave you 15 bhp more on a high performance engine compared to normal fuel.every little helps winkeye

yes indeed.it was either top gear or 5th gear that done the tests.it was on a subaru imprezza but it only gave bhp gains on performance engines.it made no difference to a standard clio.the bp ultimate gave lower gains of around 8 or 9 bhp if i remember correctly.that was compairing it to cheap supermarket petrol.

spot on... except

1) there is no such thing as 'cheap supermarket petrol' - ordinary unleaded and super unleaded petrol at EVERY petrol station is obtained (by and large) from the nearest refinery.

Except Optimax, which Shell send specially; it's now called V-power; BP are doing one too....

History - super unleaded is guaranteed at 97 RON, so Shell released Optimax at 98 RON, so they had a perceived 'edge' over other super - now other companies are following, so Shell have rebadged their petrol and guarantee 99 RON.

Some Super at Supermarkets is already guaranteed 99 RON (Tescos at Shoreham for instance).

MUCH MORE IMPORTANTLY

2) the E30 (in standard form) doesn't understand RON, therefore you are wasting your money if you buy super for it - you may get slightly better MPG, but absolutely NO MORE BHP.

arguments please..... :D

Recently put a tank of optimax in my turd, and felt like i had lost torque low down? this is not the first car i have noticed this on, and personally i would rather pay less and feel like its got more torque.

All tested by my very large ass dyno.

surelly car w3ould need a more sophisticated engine to recognise octane change? and of course the ecu mapping to use it?

all i know is it gains most bhp on turbocharged cars as it enables them to wind up the boost more without the risk of pinking / detonation etc due to cleaner burn

from my understanding octane works in reverse to what most people think, the higher the octane of a fuel the slower it burnes which allows more ignition advance or boost in a turbo car.

in basic terms the RON (research octane number) is a fuels resistance to knock (pinking)

Orangecurry i have an ALpina 2.7 with a compression ratio at 10.5:1 or higher and it will pink like a bitch on 95 RON and is mapped to run on 97 or higher do i count?

Both my dads cars pink like a bitch if you don't yuse 98RON.

is is mapped to shell optimax, i put in some normal bp fuel the other day ( i had no choice !) an it felt poo !! it could have been me, but i honestly think it makes a difference

on th M3 it did, thats a fact , 10hp difference on the same rollers !!

as for tescos fuel , well used their 99 ron a few times, it felt no dfferent to shell optimax, but i stick to the shell fuel !

Yes but E30's don't have knock sensors and cannot recognise higher octane fuel and are mapped to run on as low as 91RON! normal e30's that is

IS ans M3 were re-mapped !!

thats why they feel like poo with tesco shite in them !

my alpina runs no different on tesco 99 to optimax or BP ultimate etc i've tried them all and it's run fine on all of them

it could just be me !!

i'll always stick to optimax or what ever the high octain fuel from shell is!!

any way, im tired and feel like shit so i'm off to bed!!

i tried some optimax,,, few weeks back,,, felt like it made a slight difference, in response,,, but i "think" my engine is currently running badly, therefore the extra is giving it a hand????????

do you mean 'do I count as being non-standard'?

oh yeah I'd say you were non-standard every day of the week

I'm going to say this again - there is no such thing as 'Tescos shite' - do you think Tescos have their own refinery? Or that they ship the petrol in from abroad? No and No - it is the same petrol as at every Shell BP Esso etc etc petrol station.... the supermarkets buy it on the 'market' and simply choose to sell it for less profit that the Petrol companies, or than the FRANCHISE that runs the local BP or Shell or whatever...

except for the Optimax/V-power and maybe BP Ultimate, but all they are is higher RON than 97 with some detergent added....

....and lots of Marketing, and then it's 5% more expensive.
