try search engines like confused.com

but prob best approaching specialist brokers like adrian flux, Herts Insurance Consultants. Some direct insurers are not bad, so try bell direct. Some younger lads on here have mentioned Nationwide too

new driver, prestige and powerfull car, thats what the brokers and insurance companies see

regardless if its a £400 car, and that its slow in bmw terms

they have to look at the liability issues if he hit another car and what thats gona cost them to put right

also where you live affects you premium a fair bit

halifax was thecheapest for my first car. though still thasts a bit much, then again i paid 1800 for a 1.4 polo

before he does pass plus, ask the insurance companies for a quote with and one without,, not many insurance companies accept it, and those who do accept it,,,, tend not be the cheapest

eg:: company X does not accept,,,, but offers 1000£
company Y does but offers 2000 without,, and 1200 with

stil better of with company X and no taking pass plus, hence saving more money

If he's a student try Endsleigh, they offer a 30% student discount...well the used to anyway. Made them the most competitive quoters when I had my first car, Orion 1.6 16v

I think in reality what many young drivers do for insurance in the first year is drive as a named driver on a policy taken out by one of their parents. Will cut the quote down alot. Hope this helps, by the way nationwide and churchill are good bets for insurance for young people.

yeah my bros on my mums insurance with directline as he still lives at home, £540 for 19 year old on a 325i sport and they give him no claims aswell just as named driver, it doesnt say anywhere in policy that my mum has to do more miles then him either

He will only get a no claims bonus valid for use on a future direct line policy, the no claims is not recognised by other insurers. Still a good deal though.

If you dont plan on doing lots of miles a limited milage policy might be a good idea

Yer this is good but you dont build up a no claims bonus. Also im told these premiums are going to rise a lot soon because of people doing this.

I was in the same situation last year when i was 17 and learning on a modified 318i e30. I was quoted between 3k-5k, silly money.
Try NU.

you either live in Ireland or in Bahgdad city centre with a quote like that! at 17 on a 318 i got quotes of around 1900 from people like adrian flux and tesco.

cant you insure the car in ur name and have him as a named driver? c if that works out cheaper

If you cant get him insured on his own Direct line do that thing were the named driver can still build up no claims!!

when i got my first car 2001 1.2 8v mk2 punto it was £2030 fully comp with a company called Liverpool victoria they also dont count Alloy wheels as a mod which was the big problem i had.

Also they dont give you any money off for pass plus BUT if you dont have a claim in the first year at the end of the first year you get 2 years no claims rather than 1 so i'am 18 with 2 years no claims.

so even though you might pay a little more than the other companies you dont have to pay for youre pass plus and then the next year you can move to a different company and have more no claims and a bigger discount! :D

am paying £1400 on a 318IS :D

when i was 17 my first car was a 318i and the quote was 1800 quid third party which wasnt bad considering for an escort it wasnt far off that. that quote was with elephant .

I also found that the difference between 318 and 316 was only around 50 quid

Dont know what cover you were looking for but when my dad rang the AA for a qute on a 325is it was £40 odd more to have thired party over fully comp  ?? so it might be worth getting a quote for both just incase its the same for your son :D
