I'm considering an e30 for road rallying, it must be 4 cylinder, & i can't afford an 'M' or good 318is, so which 1800 should i go for? I know they varied over the years, when did they go from carb to injection? which responds best to budget tuning? Any advice very greatfully received.

For tuning I'd go for an older M10 engined car. The M40 is nowhere near as tough or tunable.
I'd go the extra for a tatty 318is though, you're only rallying it after all.

I'd go for a tatty 'is' aswell mate as you get the other goodies as standard aswell, mtec suspension which means bigger struts and sports seats to hold you in.
You'll spend a fortune on an M10 engine for just the same power!!
Keep it standard, take the lip spoiler off as it will last about one white, get a piece of Dural to make a sump guard, take yer front fog lights out, put better bulbs in the standard lights or take them out and run with separate spots(only four forward beams allowed) and most importantly get a good navigator. Wicked fun!
